Jerry Jones reportedly hires lawyer to block Goodell's extension

A week later, on Oct. 26, Jones convened a conference call of 17 owners, none of whom were on the compensation committee, to discuss Goodell’s contract situation and options if a deal they didn’t like were pushed through. And it was a week after that, on Nov. 2, that Jones dropped his threat of the lawsuit to the six owners on the committee.

The source added that Jones viewed his role as an ad hoc member of the committee to be the voice of the 26 other owners, and that, based on the Oct. 26 call, he’s confident he has support and is no lone wolf hijacking the process.

What basis does he have for suing? In a contract negotiation two sides have to agree to it mutually.

Just because he doesn’t agree with the other owners im confused why he can go after them personally. Can he prove collusion that damages his franchise by Roger getting this salary or staying in power?

This is capitalism. Roger has a right to ask for what he wants and the other owners who were appointed to the committee can choose to agree or not.

Is this because Jerry isn’t allowed to be in the room negotiating?

Yea, I am not sure what grounds Jerry has to sue over.

Man, we are not going to get a single hold call the rest of the season now................LOL

Because he and the other 26 owners have anti trust protection. The trust cannot appoint an exclusive committee and cut out 26 owners and not be susceptible to antitrust scrutiny.

Just lot of hot air as Jones has no leg to stand on if he sues. Only way to win this is too get the most powerful owners in the league on his side to disrupt the extension process. If Jerry can do this he will win and Goodell will be out. I just can't see them replacing Goodell in the long run.

If that’s the way the collective 32 owners agreed on then there’s no recourse. You can’t make up the rules and then sue for something you agreed to. Very similar to Article 46 except here i wonder what the gray spot is.

A committee was formed and is doing what is was written to do. Unless the other 26 owners can prove they are being irreparably harmed by the decisions of 6, there is no case.

As for harming Jerry there would have to be a case where it was proven they are directly out to get him to sue them personally.

Good for Jerry.

Goodell has a vendetta out against the Cowboys, so about time that Jerry does something about it.

Show me in the NFL charter where the compensation committee is granted the power to unilaterally extends the commissioner without the other owner's input. Cutting out 80% of ownership on leadership makes 0 sense.

The more I think about this situation the more I'm not sure that any of us know what's really going on with this. Here's another theory:

Jerry has little chance of winning a lawsuit against the other owners after already voting to give this committee the authority he is now supposedly seeking to strip. The vote on whether or not to extend Goodell has already taken place (in May) and the owners unanimously approved a resolution giving this committee the authority to negotiate the extension. There is no chance that changes without near unanimous support from the other owners, which isn't coming. Instead, master showman Jerry is going to create a circus where he can be in the center ring.

I don't think this is about Zeke as much as it is about the issue that shan't be discussed here. Jerry has repeatedly been on one side of that issue and he's seeing the ramifications of the issue bear fruit. This lawsuit is basically Jerry loudly and publicly aligning opposite of the league. He's told his team how he expects them to handle the situation. Now he's pandering to his base - to take a political term - with this lawsuit, distancing himself from the issue that is driving away viewers and unnerving advertisers. With his players he gains credibility because he's "fighting the man" and with the fans and advertisers he can say that it's us (the Cowboys) vs. the league on the "other" issue.

Jerry Jones, master marketer, strikes again.
