IRVING — The Cowboys have yet to get word from the league on the possible reinstatement of defensive tackle Josh Brent.

But owner Jerry Jones says that whenever Brent returns he will be a changed -- and better -- man because of his experiences since being convicted of vehicular manslaughter in the death of teammate Jerry Brown.

In January, Brent was sentenced to 10 years probation and 180 days in jail. He got out 45 days early, spending the final stint in rehab. But Jones said on his radio show on KRLD-FM that the incarceration had a huge impact on Brent regarding discipline and life lessons.

Regardless, and I hope the young man is, but what does that have to do with his ability to play tackle. Why does he get a spot on this team? He was only a marginal player before. What makes cowboys brass( jerry and garret) think he can help?

I don't know about marginal. He was starting to look pretty darn good right up front in the middle of Rob's D.

How he'd look in the middle of Rod's D is the question. A question this team has and obviously wants an answer to.

Well the first thing (a lie that's been perpetually told) is that he's a marginal player. No, he's not! He was a very good 0/1 technique player-starting to border on elite-who shared time with a perennial probowler in Jay Ratliff. The guy who was the starter for the 2012 season till the Ravens game when Ratliff came back and the cinci game after his incident would immediately step in to that starting DT job and transform us from a bottom 5 run D team to a top 10 one.

Is he in shape? Who knows? But when considering his possible impact you have to remember that Nick Hayden didn't play the 2012 season either before starting for us in 2013. And if he's anything close to the player he was then he obviates the need for Hayden anywhere on this team.

He was in the same status on this team as Hayden. If I recall he wasn't even considered a starter. He had a higher ceiling than Hayden, but he wasn't special. Just a rotational guy.

Careful with that. I made the same argument and caught a lot of flack. Straight out of prison, I doubt he would even push an injured T. McClain for the #2 spot.

Comparing a person who killed another human being when DUI to a veteran who served in a war is about the most asinine comparison I have heard in recent memory. Discipline from prison versus being in the military?

It's unreal, and so very Jerry Jones of a comparison.

Sure would be nice to have a thread about Brent and be kept to football.

Isnt the entire prison / dui / thing kind of like a political / reliqion type topic anymore. It's been hashed over and over.

Football is amongst us. Shouldn't that be the topic.

I just told you he wasn't a starter cause of Ratliff. He did end up starting 6 games for us that season. You can go review those games for yourself to see if that player was in the same breath as Hayden. Or you can keep spouting off like you are now without any regulatory efforts.

I agree, and I'm in favor of giving Brent another chance. You can see what Jerry was getting at, that Brent and Hennings had experiences outside the path of the typical star athlete that has been pampered since High School. That the kernel of it, but in typical Jerry fashion the final script sounded like it was written after a couple of drinks and having been run through the Randy Galloway-nator.

Josh Brent could have been released from prison at 11:00am and played a game at noon and would have been better than Nick Hayden.

Status or no, he was a better player than Hayden. He was a disruptive player who was looking at a fairly significant new deal before he imploded all that.
That said, this Jerry-speak re: how changed a man he is means nothing. He has a chemical dependency issue of some sort, on top of whatever's wrong with his judgement. If that's not been corrected yet, he won't make it on his probation and he'll be back in prison. If it has, he's probably in decent shape to help us out at what's maybe our second biggest position of need this season (outside of rush end). If he's cleared by the league to play, he can have a roster spot as far as I'm concerned.

I really wish Jerry would just shut up.

Then what would people talk about. Some whine, some complain, some back him, some don't care.....LOL

But I know what you mean, sometimes one wants to cringe when he talks. I always think what size shoe is he wearing today.
