Jerry Jones: Time off hurt Greg Hardy's production

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas-cowb...ry-jones-time-off-hurt-greg-hardys-production

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Dallas Cowboys say they want to keep free-agent linebacker Rolando McClain. They say want to keep free-agent cornerback Morris Claiborne and free-agent tight end James Hanna. Why can't they say they want -- or don't want -- to keep free-agent defensive end Greg Hardy?

There is only a sliver of a possibility Hardy returns in 2016 but owner and general manager Jerry Jones will not close the door all the way, at least publicly.

Jones would not discuss the team's plan. Earlier in the week executive vice president Stephen Jones said a decision has not been reached by the team on Hardy's future. On Friday, the Cowboys had a face-to-face meeting with agent Drew Rosenhaus.

"We all agreed that we would have loved to see him have 17 sacks," Jones said. "We all agree with that. But we didn't say he wasn't a meaningful part of the defense. He was. He was impactful on our defense in his own way. Was he impactful to the level that we hoped he might be? I'm going to say it one more time: we underestimated his comeback time after being laid off during that time. We all know this elephant in the room. We understand it. That's as far as I'm going to go with it."

It's actually multiple elephants. Hardy's four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy because of a domestic violence incident in 2014 in Charlotte was a constant shadow over the Cowboys in 2015. He was also late for or missed meetings as well as other transgressions that caused drama in certain parts of the locker room...

The burst and explosion he showed vs Néw England never resurfaced on game day. Could be rust or the rumors of him not being in proper condition during the season. If you could assure me the Cowboys would get that version of Greg Hardy we saw vs NE 85-90% of the time, I'd have no reservations about re-signing him.

There obviously was rust and there should have been. He missed all but one game in 2014 and another 6 games in 2015. That doesn't count the 2014 playoffs for the Panthers either. Missing that amount of games and practice time will result in a player being rusty.

I suspect he will be back to being a double digit sack guy this season. If he was a distraction in the locker room, late to meetings, partying too much which affected his work duties, then let him walk. If those things are exaggerated or false...then bring him back.

He got injured pretty bad against Seattle and was playing hurt the rest of the way. We also had him playing DT on passing downs which he's really not suited for.

Two things stand out to me on this.

One, it sounds like Jerry is the member of the group who is holding out the most for Hardy's return. At least that's the vibe I'm getting.

And two, if 'rust' is the reason being given, why did Hardy start the season well and his numbers dropped off as the season went along? If 'rust' was the reason, shouldn't that have been the other way around? A slow start followed by an increase in production as he rounded back into shape?

That decline is a result of drain on football conditioning and playing at a very top level. That requires continuity.

It still doesn't add up to me. He had an entire offseason and also all of the work during the season to get back in the groove.

The guy is a cancer in the locker room, and listening to Garrett's presser the other day at the combine when asked about Hardy's status, it was pretty clear to me, Garrett wants nothing to do with Hardy

How many times have we seen a petulant Garrett when the people who own and run this organization select a player while in the war room?

What Garrett wants and what he gets are two distinct things.

He gets about 5 mill a year.

He gets the opportunity to get used to the strings held by the puppet master.

If they sign him, then they'd be keeping two DE's who are an infraction away from missing all or most of the season.

Even though Hardy hasn't been involved in any domestic disputes since that incident, that's still a risk they have to consider.

I'd like them to add another quality vet at DE even if they sign Hardy.
