US cities now bidding to host next Pacquiao bout
Updated May 09, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – It’s not only the fighters who are lining for a shot at Manny Pacquiao .

Five days after the Filipino icon stormed his way past Ricky Hatton , a lot of calls have been placed through Top Rank chief Bob Arum regarding the venue of Pacquiao’s next fight.

Arum, who is Pacquiao’s promoter, said negotiations for a next fight haven’t started, and yet the cities of Dallas, New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi have signified their bids.

“I’m still euphoric over the win and now everybody’s calling me. Everybody wants to stage Manny’s next fight,” said Arum in a phone interview yesterday morning (Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas).

“The owner of the Dallas Cowboys called me and they want the fight in their new stadium,” said Arum.

The ageless promoter was referring to Jerry Jones as the owner, and the Dallas Cowboys New Stadium as the possible venue. It’s retractable-roof stadium that can accommodate 80,000 fans. It took $1 billion to build.

“Everybody wants the fight. They want it in San Francisco, in Abu Dhabi, at the Madison Square Garden in New York and at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This is fun. Manny is the hottest guy out there,” said Arum.

All the early bidding, however, would have to stop when Arum takes a quick break in New York this week.

He said the fighters are also lining up before Pacquiao.

“Everybody wants to fight him because he spells money. Now we have to look at their resumes, and we’ll discuss it once Manny comes over,” said Arum.

Among those being considered as possible opponents for Pacquiao are Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr ., Edwin Valero, Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley.

“The only one who hasn’t called me is (Vitali) Klitschko,” said Arum, laughing and of course referring to the heavyweight champion of the world.

During the conversation, Arum said he can’t find any reason behind all the buzz regarding Pacquiao’s coming home to Manila amid the swine flu scare.

“What is this really all about?” he asked.

“This is absolutely crazy. What is going on?” said Arum of calls from the Philippine government for Pacquiao to delay his return to the Philippines because of the swine flu.

“All the Filipino politicians (who came to see the fight) are back home and they didn’t have to go through all these,” said Arum. – Abac Cordero

With what he owes on the new digs, he'll host a knit-off with the golden girls bonco club if necessary.

Name another NFL GM that's discussing this. This is part of the problem with a GM/owner. Other NFL GMs are discussing football issues and football issues only.

Whatever.

The rest of the world doesn't give a rat's patoot if Russ Brandon or Mark Dominik ask anyone to do anything.

On the other hand, if you hear the name Jerry Jones, you know it's going to be news.

I see no problems there. If Jerry was the only person working on all the GM/Ownership issues, but I am sure he has a competent staff and has his son doing alot of work too. That way your staff does the work, you just call some big shot promoter, tell them who you are, and that should be enough to make an impression.

Stop player hating our GM/Owner

I think it is a very smart business move for whoever host Pacquiao's next fight. He is HUGE right now and sure to generate millions in revenue. A fight with Floyd Mayweather has the potential to be the highest paid boxing event in boxing history. Both are pretty much on the top of their game. A fight between Cotto, Mosley, Marquez or Chavez wouldn't be as big, but would still generate a nice sized revenue for the host.

Not only will it be news, but come on, Manny Pacquiao is the hottest thing out there right now. You get a fight, say vs Floyd Mayweather Jr, and as long as tickets aren't too outragous, being able to pack the stadium (or come close to it) on a weekend when it'd otherwise be idle. It's amoney maker.

And yes, other teams use their facilities for non-sporting events and other sporting events plenty. Anybody see the video of the NFL schedule makers and how they had to take into account concerts by U2 and ?Brad Paisley? when making their schedule? It happens, other GMs/Owners/Etc do make those decisions, but none are Jerry Jones.

Mayweather is fighting Marquez in July. If he looks pretty good and wins (he hasn't fought since December 2007) it would set up the latest "fight of the century" with Pacquiao. That's the one Jerry would want, IMO.

What the hell did you think Jerry was gonna do, build a 1.1 billion dollar stadium and then use it 10-12 times a year for football games?

Agree. Boxing has been ho hum since the Mike Tyson days and Manny is an infusion of excitement. MMA.. bah.. WWE.. bah.. Bring boxing back to where it once was. We need more exciting young blood in the boxing game.

For the record, I don't think Mayweather is thinking straight. If he was he would stay far away from PaQman.

I dont see it. Pacman's a beast when you fight his type of fight, but Mayweather's biggest strength is his defense and keeping control of himself. He's not gonna be an idiot like Hatton and go completely away from what his trainer(Mayweather Sr) was telling him,

I think Jerry should focus strictly on hosting an NFL playoff game... but that's just me.

Thanks. Dang, 12 years of no playoff wins and some people are satisfied with the way Jerry runs this franchise. Some people need to stop buying what Jerry is selling.

I don't give a damn about the owners stadium issues, it has nothing to do with the team. If Bud Adams wanted to do this I wouldn't have a problem because he has nothing to do with the football operations but Jerry is the GM. I don't want my GM thinking about anything but football related business.

Owner Jerry's efforts in generating revenue via the stadium, allows GM Jerry to pay for the football operations, such as the players.

Are people really buying this? The NFL has a salary cap, every team can afford any player as long as they have room under the cap. The money the stadium generates goes into his pockets. These NFL teams are gold mines for the owners.
