He won't do it alone. There will be many good players & coaches involved in the endeavor. But for those of you who doubt this man's resources and ability to accomplish the goal every Cowboys fan wants to see, I think you're selling him short...
Now, I don't know Jerry personally (though I'd love to shake his hand and just have a good ol' conversation some day). But what I do know about him is that the Cowboys have won more Superbowls under his watch than in all their history before. I know that he's a man of nearly boundless ambition, with a creativity to match. I know that he loves the Cowboys more than any person on this board. As tough as the losses are for you & I to deal with, the level of disappointment that Jerry feels goes far beyond what our own armchair infatuation can allow. The Cowboys are this man's LIFE! Literally...
Jerry has changed the league with his keen intellect, sharp wit and willingness to work hard to make the NFL a better & better place. Everyone who knows him, from Jimmy Johnson to Bill Parcells, will speak highly of Jerry's character, commitment, generosity and passion for what he does. From all accounts, he's a good man with a good heart. Truly, I wouldn't want any other owner in sports.
Listen, winning a Superbowl is hard. The Cowboys are in a league where the opposing teams have A LOT of talent. The margin between winning & losing, as we saw in many games through '08, grows thinner every successive year in this contemporary NFL. It really is a game of inches. We're inches away right now.
Will we win it all next season?
I don't know. Impossible to tell. But we definitely have a shot, and I'd say a better shot than most teams. But what I think we can count on is that Jerry will do everything in his personal power to make that happen. Again, he can't do it alone. But for all you people throwing Jerry and his ways under the bus, perhaps you need to step back and regain some perspective. This is a hard game. It's hard to win. But in terms of Jerry doing his job at GM, there is NO team in the league with more talent or that is more poised for a championship than the Cowboys. And Jerry is directly the one we have to thank for that.
All he can do is try to put us in the best position to win. There's no guarantee that we will. But I wouldn't want to have anyone else assembling our team. We started in a direction with Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett. Something happened last year. No one is exactly sure what it is. Chemistry. Coaching. Injuries. Distractions. Maybe all of the above. But Jerry himself is hardly the problem. Jerry is the reason we're even in the conversation.
We're gonna see, at least one more year, if this direction we're moving in... lots of talent, perhaps THE definitive 3-4 expert, a budding young play-caller who hopefully learned from his struggles... will yield the results we're all hoping for. But let it not escape your grasp that the reason this is a realistic hope... is because Jerry Jones is our owner, GM and loves the Cowboys more than you do.
Support the team. Enjoy the ride, through thick & thin. Let's stay positive, and shine the light of love & approval onto our 'boys. I'm grateful for Jerry Jones and the team he's put together. It's hard to win in this league. Good thing we have Jerry giving us a real shot to do so.
Peace,
