Dont you get the feeling that no matter what Jerry did, the media was waiting to rip him. I get the feeling some columnists already had the column written days or weeks ago with blanks to "insert name here"
Get this: Jerry is criticized for hiring an outstanding defensive coach versed in the 3-4.
So he is to discard everything done the past 2 years to develop a 3-4 and start over leaving many extra parts in the form of line backers and misfit defensive ends to revive the 4-3 if he hired someone like Rivera--who by the way is unproven as a head coach but developed a pretty good defense in Chicago. OR did Lovie Smith develop the defense and Rivera tweeked it. I am sure that would have been the criticisms leveled with Rivera as HC or DC.
Phillips now is criticized for being unable to develop a young Qb in Romo and Garrett, who was forced on Phillips is too young and inexperienced vs someone like Turner
No one mentions that Garrett was a hot hire and under time constraints to be hired in a specific time period
Dont let facts get in the way of a good rant
So, say we hire Turner. Immediately criticism is leveled that the defense that collapsed late would be left unattended and Garretts development would be stunted. Cant win
The argument is now being leveled that Phillips or Turner lacked wow factor. How many latest and greatest--especially college coaches have flopped miserably. There is good reason Phillips has been in the league as long as he has.
Now the accusations that Jerry took an embarassingly long time to hire are being thrown out there. Never mind that the Super Bowl dead period was in the midst of the search. So Jerry hires someone before the super bowl and he is accused of attempting to steal the limelight and that he should have waited to interview the hot candidate in Rivera! Cant win.
Now Phillips is being viewed as Jerry puppet. I dont think any hire wouldnt have been viewed as such. It is just the aura and history of Jerry.
So, I vow to ignore what the talking heads say and wait and see

I'm sorry to say I must agree. When it comes to Jerry It's heck if you do and Heck if you don't.

Jerry feels this team is close to being where we all want it to be Therefore; he went w/experience at HC and on the side of the ball that needed the fix.. What the heck is wrong with that thinking.

I'm with you I'll sit back and see what happens.

I know Jerry has learned something in the 4 years under Parcells.

He's learned he wants to run the whole show again, which means he's forgotten what he learned the previous 8 seasons before Parcells, at that time he finally learned he SUCKS, but here we go again.

In other words, you think Jerry's idiot? You think he doesn't know that you can keep doing things the same way and expect different results?

Yea, people are complaining that since we didn't hire Norv, we didn't hire anyone who can groom Romo. Let's look at some of the top QBs and their head coaches: Brady-Belicheck, Palmer-Lewis, P. Manning-Dungy. It seems that those qbs did alright with a defensive minded head coach. Oh, and not to mention that everyone fell in love with Romo when Parcells was coaching, and he is a defensive minded head coach. I think it really matters on the QB coach and the OC. Garrett will be fine grooming Romo, and we can finally have an agressive defense. In my mind, we really needed someone to take the defense to another level, more then ANOTHER coach to mentor Romo. I can't wait to see our defense take over games, and to see Garrett open up the offense.

Sure looks like he is performing insanity! I think Jerry has missed running the whole org. since Bill was here. I don't think Jerry thinks that he SUCKS as a GM, if the team wins, he wants to be the main reason. I don't think Jerry looks at it the way you describe.:)

I disagree. If Jerry hired one of the media approved coaches like Ron Rivera or Norm Chow, they would have given him glowing reviews. They gave much props for hiring Bill Parcells years ago. Cmon, let's get over this "The media has a conspiracy against the Cowboys" That excuse is just pathetic. It was created during the Campo years by fans who were unwilling to admit Jerry screwed up by promoting Dave Campo to head coach.

I don't think Jerry's hire is as bad the media is making out to seem. He didn't have many other options. There were no big named coaches available. I think Jerry would have hired Ron Rivera but couldn't risk him

You really need to work on your typing skills, I guess you're trying to ask my choice of HC.

Ron Rivera, I would've like to see him come in here and rebuild the defense back to the 4-3, while keeping some of the players. I don't believe this team is anywhere close to the superbowl like some do, so take a year or two to build things right. I believe Rivera could've done those things, along with establish a toughness and an attitude within the team.

and what would happen if Rivera comes in and finishes 6-10? You and most of the fans would be calling for his head after one year. If Phillips chokes the first 2 years, I doubt he'll finish the contract.

In a generally weak, parity-filled NFC, we have as much a shot at the Super Bowl as anyone.

Come on, look at today's NFL . . . . Chicago- no real QB; New Orleans - turnaround story of the year; Philly - was almost out of it until a strong December, and did it with a 2nd string QB.

Today's NFL is so different (i.e., average, no real dynasties) than it used to be just a decade ago.

It was obvious to me that Parcell's had enough of not being able to run the team as a coach should. Parcell's new best and knew that, as he said several times "this young man needs a lot of work", but was forced to go with a youngin as QB before he was ready.

Lets all hope Wade won't bow to the GM.

The Cowboys problems aren't nessesarily about talent but about philosopy, attitude, will, determination, intangible type things. It's not because of talent that we don't win.

the media? just look at a few vocal posters in here who rip his every move regardless of why. it's all some people do - find a target, lock in, leave common sense at the door and bash bash bash.

then every once in awhile flip 'em a backhanded compliment to show how unbiased you are. that's the key man.

There are without question a few columnists out there whose entire schtick is to bash jerry regardless of what he does. Galloway for example has gotten mileage out of it for years.

even thei compliments are backhanded.

It drives me nucking futs. Look, I'm no homer. I can be critical when it's warranted.

But please. Give it a rest or FIND ANOTHER NUCKING TEAM.

Questions for the smart fans, the fans who know all.

Do you think it's possible that hiring a coach with Phillips' experience and track record is the sign of an owner who wants a puppet?

Do you think Jones might have been able to exert a little more control of someone like Rivera?

I posted the same thing Day 1 BP left.
People love to ***** and moan.

Unlike the smart fans, I think we have a great shot at the suberbowl this year.

What's funny is that even if we do win it this year, it will have been with Parcells team.
Jerry and his new joke/puppet HC will receive no credit.

i can't ever remember espn actually publically DOGGING a new hire on their website headline.

it says "way to settle, jerry."

that is irresponsible journalism, in my eyes. if i wanted opinions in my news, I would read a column.

espn has really disenfranchised me over the past 7 months. at least now i can turn to local reporting, but i feel sorry for ya'll outside of texas stuck with that national crap.
