That's what it sounded like. But then, since it's a congenital defect, he'll be dealing with this his whole career, right? Was it just a unique hit that cause the injury that another player wouldn't have sustained, but something, now healed, he can just play through? Or is it a recurring thing that can happen again, each time needing 8-10 weeks of the season to recover from?
Something happens that cauuses the break. He was not born with the break. He was just born susceptible to it breaking.
Once it breaks it might heal but because it is an unknown injury he would never have ceased activity long enough for it to heal.
Once it is detected the severity at that point can vary. If it is still basically a hairline fracture, then a period of inactivity sometimes combined with a back brace can resolve the problem.
The break generally happens to young people. Now that he is an adult, if it heals, then it is less prone to another break as compared to when he was younger.
If the break had separated and was no longer a hairline type fracture, then surgery would have been required.
This problem is appearently not well understood by many general practice MDs some of whom put innacurate information out on the web. I've found that most Doctor's in casual conversation won't just say they don't know.
The above is my layman's version of a discussion that I had with a back surgeon that is a Cowboys fan and has seen all of the reports about Tapper.
