Jerry on Tapper

So now that they are aware of his back condition, can something be done to prevent it from flaring back up at some point? Or is it going to be one of those ticking time bomb deals?

Once his back is fixed he will get popped for smogging again.

Hopefully Tapper can give us some production in 2017. I say go into this draft and free agency as though you don't have any real DE contributors...

It's a back injury.....They always linger, IMO.

That's what it sounded like. But then, since it's a congenital defect, he'll be dealing with this his whole career, right? Was it just a unique hit that cause the injury that another player wouldn't have sustained, but something, now healed, he can just play through? Or is it a recurring thing that can happen again, each time needing 8-10 weeks of the season to recover from?
Something happens that cauuses the break. He was not born with the break. He was just born susceptible to it breaking.

Once it breaks it might heal but because it is an unknown injury he would never have ceased activity long enough for it to heal.

Once it is detected the severity at that point can vary. If it is still basically a hairline fracture, then a period of inactivity sometimes combined with a back brace can resolve the problem.

The break generally happens to young people. Now that he is an adult, if it heals, then it is less prone to another break as compared to when he was younger.

If the break had separated and was no longer a hairline type fracture, then surgery would have been required.

This problem is appearently not well understood by many general practice MDs some of whom put innacurate information out on the web. I've found that most Doctor's in casual conversation won't just say they don't know.

The above is my layman's version of a discussion that I had with a back surgeon that is a Cowboys fan and has seen all of the reports about Tapper.

Just to double up on your points xwalker, Read in one of the reports that it was multiple tiny hairline fractures, and yes, because he was never diagnosed he just kept playing thru it. So to your point, he never got to heal. The hope was indeed backbrace to stop movement and rest. Let all the little fractures heal. And - kinda like Romo, build up the muscles around his back to strengthen the area.
When he comes back, in theory he should be OK. But we said that about Romo too. It will be just one of the many things we will all be watching come training camp i.e. does he take multiple days off like Romo Wednesdays etc...

Boom. Thanks.

For the record, xwalker is not a doctor and is not pretending to be a doctor. I know he said that, but it's very confusing for some. He's not an internet doctor, either.

Did he stay at a Holiday Inn express last night?

Also, love the implication of your post... that there are stupid people all over this board. You should just come out and say it, though, rather than hinting at it. Be direct.

It seems fairly direct.

It's stupid to accuse somebody of not being a doctor when they post about a medical issue and explicitly say they are not a doctor. :)

You can always count on Jerry to promote a guy like Tapper, even if the signs don't encourage any thoughts of ongoing health. Perhaps in time, he'll improve enough to be considered a solid contributor and maybe he won't. It's not enough to inhibit Jerry from spouting his promotional hype, however -- just business as usual for him. Like most of us, I'm hoping this fella recovers but surely wouldn't be inclined to bet the farm on it.
