I watched all of Arizona's games on the NFL Network this offseason waiting to see some disaster of LT play by Davis. I just didn't see it. He was extremely solid, and looked no worse than Flozell. Allowing 8 sacks when your team is one of the NFL's most pass happy offenses and usually playing from a huge deficits when the defense has no obligation to stay honest to the run is not a crime. I'm not sure anyone has really evaluated him there, or they're just repeating what they've heard over and over again based on stigma. His stigma said he was mediocre at best as a guard, at least that's what the Arizona folks will tell you to justify why a great physical talent couldn't succeed in their horrible franchise. He's plenty athletic enough to play left tackle. He was a consensus Top 5 draft pick for a reason.

Anyways, I like Flozell but I have absolutely no desire to pay him Pro Bowl left tackle money (and someone on the open market will) You can't just look at how they're playing today, you have to project how they'll play through the length of the contract. Jerry got into a lot of trouble resigning and extending contracts of players well heading into their twilight years in the mid-late 90's and it wrecked havoc with the salary cap when they're signing bonuses were accelerated when their bodies wouldn't allow them to play anymore at a high level. (Tolbert, Novacek, Haley, Aikman).

The Scribe and I agree on something. Life as we know must be ending shortly.

Flo's time is done here at the end of the year I am tired of hanging on to long and not playing the young guys. This summer Pat or Free will just have to step up

I just don't see 6'7, 340 pound Adams playing until he's 35. I think this is one of the times where you just kind of let go of a good player, and get younger. I'd love to see him play 3 more years - but it hinders the development of younger players, and he's GOING to be expensive. Anyone who thinks the guy will sign a $5m/year contract is probably not thinking right. The guy is 32, the Cowboys(currently) are 8-1, a large part of that is due to the offensive lines play - and more specifically, his play... meanwhile, this will be his LAST OPPORTUNITY at MONEY in the pro's...

He's not going to sign a $5 million/year contact unless Jerry rubs his belly while sliding Donuts down his throat.. The contracts where players take less money than market value are pretty rare....

If we make it to the SB then it is a bad play not to pay Flo the going rate. I see no reason why he can't play at a high level for another 3-5 years. I'd do exactly what Jerry is doing. Pretend not to be behind the eight ball and then slowly try to get him to agree to a front loaded contract. I would think going rate for a LT with guaranteed money for 3 years and incentives would keep the OL intact and protect Dallas from really having to pay for more than another three years.

Going rate guaranteed money for three years for Pro Bowl play at LT is just no where near a stupid play. Even if Free or Mac is ready it would be criminal to not sign a player his magnitude. It's only money and we have enough to pay him and everyone else.

I don't see a downside from keeping him.

I just don't like the idea of Flo blocking for Jason Campbell for the next 4 years while we try unnecessarily to replace him with one of four players who we know almost certainly will not be as good.

We should keep him right here if at all possible.

Worst case, just franchise Flo for 1 more year and give Free an extra year to develop.

Or, if they aren't sure about Free as a potential starter, use one of the Day 1 picks and draft one more OT to compete against Free.

I agree, I would franchise him. Gives another year and you get the last of Adam's good years...

I think that would be a good starting point when talking about what to do w/ Flozell, although my mind is pretty much made up that we should re-sign him

We do not know that the guys could be better than Flo until they get on the field we will not know.

Flo is gone it is going to come down to money and franchsing him for 1 year is not 5 million with the Orlando and Ogden contracts it would be more like 8+ Million to franchise him.

Flo is gone period the dude has played his best Football in what 3 years and it happens to be his contract year.

My best friend is 51 and has been a Colts Fan since 1964. He spends hours a day on his team just like we do. He claims Glenn told Polian last spring(2006) that that could be his last year and in the best interest of the Colts he should plan for his retirement because if it didn't come after the 2006 season it would surely come after the 2007 season(as we know now it came sooner rather than later). They tried to talk him into playing this year, but his warning was behind them giving away their 2008 first round pick to move up to draft a small school LT in the 2nd in 07. They knew he wasn't gonna play much longer.

Jerry knew this Flo situation was coming, and he gave Bigg a BIG deal with that in mind, knowing he could always turn to Bigg as out future LT if some team threw the moon at Flo. Not sure if that helps, but that's how i see it.

thanks BigDakota, but I think Jerry should try to hold onto Flo, at least for another year, so that our young OTs, Free and McQ, are ready to start, I like them both alot, just I would rather they not see starting action for at least another year

we got a long ways to go before we get to this point, so I'm not going to worry about it too much

it isnt just this yr...when he's healthy he's been a probowl calibar LT for severla years...this yr he has been fantastic...if they can keep im w/o breaking the bank its a no brainer...the guy is a very good LT, and those kinds of players dont grow on trees

also, you cant fault Jones for extending the contracts of core players in their primes...nobody knew that Aikman would have his career ended prematurely...nobody knew Jay Novecek had a horrendous back condition...nobody knew Tolbert had any problems..Haley you could say they knew about, but he was playing tremendous football when he got his new deal

Adams does not have a degenerative condition (that we know of)...there's no reason not to keep him if we can

If Jerry can get Flo back on a 3 year deal then he will do that -- the only glitch here is if Flo wants a huge SB and a longer term contract.

Given how Flo is playing, 3 years at 18 million is not unreasonable. He's been lights out. That's only about a mill a year more than Tony Pashos got.

But he only plays at this level during contract years ----Franchise him for one year at the most ---he stills has to play at this level. That gives you another year to see what your young guys have and to get them ready

So in 2003 AFTER he got his deal, he didn't play well? Wrong. He was a stud that year.
