First time ever? C'mon, Clove! I'm not wrong that much, am I?

There's not a no-cut clause, but his guaranteed money won't change. I think his deal was worth north of $60 million guaranteed.

I can't, but I see Tony differently than I do most players.

Tony will make a fantastic analyst like Troy or Moose.

And that's a couple easy days a week, not seven 15-hour days a week for six months.

I think he should go to the college level and be a HC. He's got the personality to recruit and be a leader of young men...wouldn't surprise me if he is HC at a Top-20 college program in 10 years.

Yeah, you really have to love coaching to do it. Talk about a grind.

I could see him being more of an "assistant", a highly paid one. Let him do what he does best, watch film, analyze opponents, and determine their tendencies during the season and on game day. QB's like Tony love the chess game, but you're not going to get a guy after his contracts to work 90 hours a week with a family. I wouldn't either.

But, he could bring a ton of value as a "consultant" whose job is to break down opponents that other guys may not have time for, or even more importantly, don't have nearly the knowledge Tony does. A normal work schedule, and all he does is figure out how to destroy our opponents. I'm down with that.

If he is our Offensive coordinator it won't be anytime soon.

That press conference I just listened to sounded like a guy that is nowhere near ready to retire.

He's got way too much football in him to think of retirement. If he thinks of retiring this season it's based on emotion and not based on ability.

The gist of Tony's press conference today was such that he conceded the QB starting job to Dak but he also went on to say the the competitive fires still burn within him to compete (and more than ever.) He sounded like one who would be inclined to stay with Dallas through 2016 and do whatever he could to help their cause. Next year will be another matter to be decided when the time presents itself.

The statements that followed from the commentators would lead one to believe that he will most likely be playing for another team next year. It's not written in stone, of course but that would be an option that could present itself if he still wants to play as his comments might lead one to believe. Whether that conclusion is 100% accurate or not remains to be seen.

Absolutely, he could be a fantastic offensive coordinator. He basically already is the OC here.

But why would a guy with $100 million banked want the 90-hour-per-week grind of being a coach?
To stay around the game he was prematurely taken away from

He'd have to be willing to restructure or redo his contract. If he's willing to do that, the sky is the limit to what we could do team wise, and the sky would be the limit what he would be able to do past his playing years.
I think what he may have been saying is that coaches don't get paid nearly the amount of money he is used to getting and its a hard grind so would room want to do that - I was wondering the same myself. If he did, it wouldn't be because of money but because he wants to stay in the game.

This is how I feel. Some folks just can't get away from it, like myself.

No matter if he's a coach or a TV commentator, I'm sure we'll see Tony around for years to come.
Tony doesn't owe anybody anything. He is a solid..decent man that did his best and represented the Cowboys and tne NFL in the best possible light. I will always admire this most improbable Cowboy hero. He is a good man. Who could ask for more .

"Jaylon Smith is in absolute excellent shape," Jones said. Adding: "...Certainly to the extent that we should be optimistic about some of the things we are seeing but that's obviously what I'm representing. We'll leave it at that, I don't think he's ready to go against Baltimore."

Jerry is the most obtuse person I have ever heard speak the English language.
You should have heard him say it live. The amount of Uh's would leave you nauseous.

Very likely so . . . and let's also bear in mind that the possibility exists that we might see him playing for another team next year, assuming another team affords him that opportunity. He did say that the fires to play still burn stronger than ever in him. The post conference announcers were very anxious to assert the idea of him playing elsewhere in 2017. We'll see if that possibility bears fruit or not in future discussions.

What would you guys think of Romo eventually taking over as QB coach or even OC at some point after he hangs 'em up? I like Wade Wilson, but I think Romo could excel as QB coach. Not sure about OC yet, but maybe down the road after more coaching experience.

Jerry Jones tackles Dak, Romo as future coach

Dallas' improbable rise to best record in the NFL makes owner Jerry Jones' brutally honest weekly radio hits required listening at this point. With everything from ugly babies, burner cell phones and Tony Romo on the docket, here's what the NFL's most consistent live wire had to say:

On the Tony Romo-Dak Prescott situation

Jones is beginning to make more sense than anyone when it comes to addressing his pending quarterback mini-drama. Romo will be in uniform this weekend as an active backup for the first time all season. Jones, who has said repeatedly that Prescott will keep the job until he doesn't, isn't worried about the rookie peering over his shoulder.

"The other day, Tony was taking some snaps from under the center and Tony was bragging on Dak. He said, boy, he doesn't miss a trick. He looks at everything and just soaks it up," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas Tuesday. "...The key thing is the benefit that Dak will get from watching Tony as Tony takes snaps in a practice, as it should be. The big thing is how much Tony is into helping Dak prepare."

Jones said it would be "madness" to say that Romo would definitely not take any snaps this season because, if that were the case, there would be no point in having a backup quarterback anyway.

But consider this -- even if Romo's time in Dallas as a player is done or coming to a close, the window for him to coach or aid in personnel seems wide open based on Jones' comments.

"Make no mistake, he's really wonderful about this. Tony is gonna have serious options," Jones said. "And of course he is young relatively speaking. Tony has the ability to be a great -- I'm not talking about a good one -- a great offensive coordinator. He has an eye and has an understanding about offensive football that's exceptional. He could be as a matter of fact two years ago, I sat down with him and said I really want you in the process as we really get into picking a quarterback for the future because I don't want you to leave your career without having the benefit of you helping us get this quarterback and getting him ready to go and of course his eyes just lit up and he said I'm your man."

On Randy Gregory

As reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Gregory is facing a year-long suspension after yet another failed drug test. Jones is not ready to give up on his once high-upside second-round pick.

"As long as Randy Gregory is as conscientious -- and I know that sounds like you're talking out of both sides of your mouth if in fact he's had a test -- but I'm not gonna get into what is known about dependence and substance, relative to well-meaning people having relapses," he said. "It's a fact of life. He's a young guy and certainly he's got those challenges. ... The point is I really hope that he can continue to make progress, and I do not rule out Randy Gregory being on the field for the Cowboys."

Jones added: "He's our baby. He may be an ugly baby, but he's our baby."

On Jaylon Smith

As some Dallas-area papers have noted, should second-round pick Jaylon Smith pan out anywhere near pre-injury projections, Dallas' 2016 draft could go down as one of the greatest in history. There is a long way to go, of course. Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott would have to perform well beyond this year.

But Jones is not ready to let that dream die. While Smith, who suffered a torn ACL and MCL at the end of the 2015 college football season, isn't near ready to play yet, Jones said he is making progress.

He would not comment on whether the Cowboys would bring Smith back for a playoff run.

"Jaylon Smith is in absolute excellent shape," Jones said. Adding: "...Certainly to the extent that we should be optimistic about some of the things we are seeing but that's obviously what I'm representing. We'll leave it at that, I don't think he's ready to go against Baltimore."
Tony Romo is the next Jason Garrett for the Cowboys. After he retires, he will be hired on the coaching staff and then eventually offensive Coordinator. When JG gives up the clipboard, Romo will pick it up as our head coach. The guy is too genius to not be hired as a coach here.
