Romo the next QB coach, then OC, then HC? Wow, you guys are unreal. I can only imagine what will happen if Dak takes this team to a Super Bowl (and I hope Dak can do it). Push for him to be given half ownership of the franchise?

Absolutely, he could be a fantastic offensive coordinator. He basically already is the OC here.

But why would a guy with $100 million banked want the 90-hour-per-week grind of being a coach?
Romo has analyst written all over him IMO

I doubt Romo will want the hard grind of being an NFL coach. Maybe when he gets older and his kids are a little bit older he will consider a coaching job, but I doubt he jumps into coaching right after he retires. I honestly think he will follow in the footsteps of Aikman and Irvin and work on television, but who knows.

What would you guys think of Romo eventually taking over as QB coach or even OC at some point after he hangs 'em up? I like Wade Wilson, but I think Romo could excel as QB coach. Not sure about OC yet, but maybe down the road after more coaching experience.

Jerry Jones tackles Dak, Romo as future coach

Dallas' improbable rise to best record in the NFL makes owner Jerry Jones' brutally honest weekly radio hits required listening at this point. With everything from ugly babies, burner cell phones and Tony Romo on the docket, here's what the NFL's most consistent live wire had to say:

On the Tony Romo-Dak Prescott situation

Jones is beginning to make more sense than anyone when it comes to addressing his pending quarterback mini-drama. Romo will be in uniform this weekend as an active backup for the first time all season. Jones, who has said repeatedly that Prescott will keep the job until he doesn't, isn't worried about the rookie peering over his shoulder.

"The other day, Tony was taking some snaps from under the center and Tony was bragging on Dak. He said, boy, he doesn't miss a trick. He looks at everything and just soaks it up," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas Tuesday. "...The key thing is the benefit that Dak will get from watching Tony as Tony takes snaps in a practice, as it should be. The big thing is how much Tony is into helping Dak prepare."

Jones said it would be "madness" to say that Romo would definitely not take any snaps this season because, if that were the case, there would be no point in having a backup quarterback anyway.

But consider this -- even if Romo's time in Dallas as a player is done or coming to a close, the window for him to coach or aid in personnel seems wide open based on Jones' comments.

"Make no mistake, he's really wonderful about this. Tony is gonna have serious options," Jones said. "And of course he is young relatively speaking. Tony has the ability to be a great -- I'm not talking about a good one -- a great offensive coordinator. He has an eye and has an understanding about offensive football that's exceptional. He could be as a matter of fact two years ago, I sat down with him and said I really want you in the process as we really get into picking a quarterback for the future because I don't want you to leave your career without having the benefit of you helping us get this quarterback and getting him ready to go and of course his eyes just lit up and he said I'm your man."

On Randy Gregory

As reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Gregory is facing a year-long suspension after yet another failed drug test. Jones is not ready to give up on his once high-upside second-round pick.

"As long as Randy Gregory is as conscientious -- and I know that sounds like you're talking out of both sides of your mouth if in fact he's had a test -- but I'm not gonna get into what is known about dependence and substance, relative to well-meaning people having relapses," he said. "It's a fact of life. He's a young guy and certainly he's got those challenges. ... The point is I really hope that he can continue to make progress, and I do not rule out Randy Gregory being on the field for the Cowboys."

Jones added: "He's our baby. He may be an ugly baby, but he's our baby."

On Jaylon Smith

As some Dallas-area papers have noted, should second-round pick Jaylon Smith pan out anywhere near pre-injury projections, Dallas' 2016 draft could go down as one of the greatest in history. There is a long way to go, of course. Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott would have to perform well beyond this year.

But Jones is not ready to let that dream die. While Smith, who suffered a torn ACL and MCL at the end of the 2015 college football season, isn't near ready to play yet, Jones said he is making progress.

He would not comment on whether the Cowboys would bring Smith back for a playoff run.

"Jaylon Smith is in absolute excellent shape," Jones said. Adding: "...Certainly to the extent that we should be optimistic about some of the things we are seeing but that's obviously what I'm representing. We'll leave it at that, I don't think he's ready to go against Baltimore."
Just shut your face Jerrah. You just put your death kiss on this season. Nothing that comes out of your mouth matters to me at this point. The only thing that can make things worse is throwing Romo cold into a playoff game down by three scores and setting him up to fail. You suck you old fool.

Yeah, you really have to love coaching to do it. Talk about a grind.

I could see him being more of an "assistant", a highly paid one. Let him do what he does best, watch film, analyze opponents, and determine their tendencies during the season and on game day. QB's like Tony love the chess game, but you're not going to get a guy after his contracts to work 90 hours a week with a family. I wouldn't either.

But, he could bring a ton of value as a "consultant" whose job is to break down opponents that other guys may not have time for, or even more importantly, don't have nearly the knowledge Tony does. A normal work schedule, and all he does is figure out how to destroy our opponents. I'm down with that.
He could be the Dak-whisperer on the sideline. I like it. But after listening to him today, I'm starting to think he seeks a trade in the offseason. The usual suspects may be interested. If there are no suitors, he'll retire.

I would love Romo as a coach in any capacity with the Cowboys. He's been my favorite player for so long and him staying with the Boys would be awesome. It'd be like Darren Woodson being our Defensive coordinator or Michael Irvin being a WR coach. There's a handful of guys who's either personality, work ethic, passion, and football IQ that have played for the Cowboys that I'd want to see as coaches. Romo, Woodson, Irvin, Witten are guys that come to mind when I wish former Cowboys would be coaches for us.

I hope there's a chance that Romo accepts his back up role for next year and the year after. He would be the best case scenario for a back up QB in Dallas. He knows the offense in and out, he can play at a high level and he's getting old so he only has 2-3 years of playing left and that's if his body cooperates. 1 year of a full 16 game schedule if everything goes great, but I don't see him holding up physically at 38 and 39 years old unless he plays sparingly as a back up. I hope it's here and we get about three straight super bowl rings and then he becomes the QB coach or OC.

omg. i was so happy the romo era would be finally over. i am so sick of this loser mentality he brought to this franchise.
There's absolutely nothing about Romo that is a "loser mentality". Maybe the Cowboys organization had a loser mentality when Romo was playing but I'd put that on Jerry being satisfied with putting together a mediocre team.

Without Romo those 8-8 seasons would have been 2-14 season or 3-13. Romo was the only reason why we had a chance to win any games between 2007-2015. It's possible to love Dak and not be disrespectful to Tony and what he's done for the franchise. Especially after today and how much class he showed and how much he showed he's a team player. He's earned our respect as fans, if he hasn't then I don't know what you expect from a player.

Blimey!
Is it just me or do we always avoid hoisting African-American players as future coaches?
After all, they constitute 65% of players.
OK, I have gone to my bunker, good mates!

Romo is so wealthy l can not imagine him wanting to coach. Maybe, the TV would interest him. With his wealth, he can do whatever he wants!

Because Tony truly loves the game............do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life.
