Jerry says he won't be frisky in 2017 draft

Jerry says he won't pull a "Jaylon Smith" in the 2017 draft. I hope he sticks to this, and does not draft injured player(s).

Last year, they probably felt they could afford it considering our entire defense was set going into the draft.

I believe the Gregory, Lawrence and McClain suspensions happened afterwards

This year we don't have that luxury, we need guys that can play.

Well I stand corrected.

I am pretty sure that Gregory was only expected to be 4 games at the time of draft; the team did believe they were going to win the appeal for Lawrence.

Regardless, one 4 game suspension does not mean a team should spend a high second round pick to replace a player you just spent a second round pick on the two years before. I understand why the team felt they could draft a red shirt player...it's not what I would've done. There really did not seem like there was a need for players that had to play now on the defense last year versus this year so they felt they would get who they felt was one of the best players in the draft.

This year it's different though, we need a safety and we need corners that can play right away.

I think Gregory is suspended for one full year, and that happened after week 15, if I remember correctly...thus, he can't play until after that....(i.e.: he is dead to the team this season and likely beyond)

Unfortunately, regardless of what our President said during the campaign...the new AG seems intent on cracking down on places where it's legal so talk of leniency may be thrown out for the next 4 years, at the least.

Nothing wrong with taking a flyer after round two provided they already acquired a de and a secondary player. We know CB is likely to be a future need as well with Scandrick and Carroll hitting 30 so I have no issue redshirting a secondary player if they can help in future years.

As long as we don't draft another te in the first two rounds.....

Technically no, he can apply for reinstatement on January 5th. So he *could* play in the playoffs if we make it. I doubt it, but that answers your question.

This probably eliminates Sidney Jones from consideration but not necessarily McKinley, Moreau, or Butt assuming these players are expected to be ready by early in the regular season.
