Jerry Says "No Urgency To Add A WR To The Roster"

1. Today is August 2nd. Season start over a month away.
2. Cowboys have 11, count 'em, 11 wide receivers on the roster. Sure, most are rookies or otherwise inexperienced, but how do you get experience if you don't get to play? Cole Beasley, and other vets, are available. It's not like there is nobody out there the Cowboys can get.
3. On most teams there are only two top receivers, the rest are average to a bit above average, with Lamb and Gallup (who apparently will miss maybe 2 of 17 games) are top receivers. Brown is a solid vet, Vasher has already shown good hands, etc. It's not like Dallas is devoid of quality receivers.

Why do we go through this every year, people panic as soon as one bad thing happens?

It's risky but if Gallup only misses 4 games, you can survive with this WR group. You'll need Kellen Moore to be creative to overcome the inexperience at WR.

Well, I saw Gallup on the NFL Network show, being interviewed, didn't seem to be concerned at all about not getting back by game 2. Otherwise, all I can go on is what's been reported. Not a matter of confidence, I just don't have any direct knowledge of how he's doing.

I see no reason to take a pessimistic or optimistic view. I'll just wait and see...

I'm just not a fan of the unknown. Sometimes it works out fine. A lot of the time it doesn't, especially with the bargain-bin unknown that the Jonese now shop for. There's a long list of fail and a short list of success with that. We're counting on a third-round rookie, a couple of players drafted later than that, several UDFAs and the USFL MVP who's never played in this league. Our expectations with that group shouldn't be real high. Could we find another Miles Austin? Sure, but the fact that Miles Austin in 2006 is the last big-time UDFA receiver we found (and it took a few years for him to develop) tells us how hard it is.

As far as the draft picks go, we did pretty well with Gallup and Wilson, but we've also drafted since 2009 (after the third round), Fehoko, Noah Brown, Devin Street, Ryan Switzer, Danny Coale, Manuel Johnson and Dwayne Harris. Only Harris has been more than a fourth receiver. If we want to throw in Terence Williams to include the third round, we've had four successes out of 10 WRs drafted as far as finding third receivers or better.

I'd have to see what you saw, but his most recent comments were "Week 1 is not a realistic possibility" that doesn't sound like he's targeting week two to me.

A lot of the talking heads on tv have been saying, and which I happen to mostly agree with, is that the way the running game goes will have more bearing on the team's success than the passing game. I agree with it because I see the o-line as being better at run blocking than pass blocking. Even Tyron Smith at this point in his career.

Regardless, as I said he's mainly a slot receiver, this team isn't going to live or die based on slot receiver, there are bigger needs on this team, like OG and S, I'd spend my money there....

What a great catch against the Giants at the end of the game to win it. I think it was a 40 yard bomb. He can be used everywhere. He was mainly a slot receiver because that’s all we needed him to be at the time.

I have to say I am somewhat enjoying this. I personally like the commitment to youth and its making the cry babies jump off the cliff at every turn.

These same cry babies that were lamenting the signing of Washington are now having a cow over his minimal loss. Funny to watch actually.

The thing is, Washington wasn't really a number 1 or 2, but he's a legit number 3 if you know what you're looking at. I can see him having another 700-800 yard season if he got enough reps.

By the way, this is exactly what you should say if you're the owner or GM and trying to sign players for cheap.

You do this because it lowers the bar for free agents to negotiate with the Cowboys in FA. They don't want overspend in free agency. When you show your hand: that you really need a WR, which we don't even really know for sure right now, it increases the cost. Higher demand means higher price.

We're going to sign a WR.

We're just not going to rush, or overpay, to do it.

Agreed. But Tolbert is looking to be the real deal. He will be a better #3 once Gallup returns.

I think if he was available during the playoffs, we would have won the San Fran game.

Adding a FA WR now costs you very little. Why not give yourself some insurance here? Like you can probably get a Fuller on the cheap at this point, likely some one year deal for a couple of million. If the rookies and young guys ball out in camp, you can likely cut Fuller and not have any real long term cap issues.

It's not panic. It's just common sense. Expecting TJ Vasher or Brown or Turpin to suddenly develop into high level NFL WRs in order to take some of the focus off Lamb is real pie in the sky thinking. Tolbert is the only guy that really has a chance and he's a rookie that likely will need time to find himself.

There is zero downside in adding a veteran WR in the next week. But Jerry and Stephen often overvalue what they have simply because those two were the ones picking these guys.

The knock on Fuller is injuries.

But he'd be my 2nd choice, behind Sanders.
