More than any other Owner/GM Jerry has done some mid-season trades and some huge ones at that.

Exhibit A: Herschel Walker. October 12, 1989. This trade is an epic one that has been discussed so many times I won't review the details. This was Jimmy's idea but Jerry made it happen. Do make note of the date. This was an in-season trade.

-Exhibit B: Charles Haley, August 27, 1992. OK...the Haley trade was done at the end of preseason...but we'll call it mid-season for the sake of discussion. The Niners were tired of Haley's antics and looking to move Charles. Carmen Policy got first, second and third round picks from Jerry. Of course some argue that the Cowboys got Super Bowls in exchange for those picks. They Boys needed a bigtime disruptor and Charles was all that.

-Exhibit C: On Oct 14, 2008 Jerry traded a 1, 3 and 6th round pick for Roy Williams. Of course this one was a total mis-assessment of talent and need.

I'm telling you that Jerry is going to try to pull another blockbuster in the coming weeks to acquire a pressure player for the defensive line.

It makes total sense:
1. Jerry has a history
2. The Cowboys have a huge need. The pass-rush is a huge problem.
3. The payoff could be a Super Bowl appearance.

And I'd add a 4th reason it makes sense:
4. Jerry can reason to himself and to his staff: We hit a home run in the draft so we won't have a lot of huge needs next spring. It's as if we got two first rounders out of Zeke and Prescott and the team might have have a "redshirt 1st rounder" with Jaylon Smith. I can already hear Jerry talk about the deal with this exact language and justification.

Jerry also will justify to himself the over-spending that will be required. He's specifically said some of his best deals in business and football have been when he (seemingly) over-paid.

If you are a GM of a team with no real 2016 playoff prospects...and a good pass-rusher on your roster ...we are talking of a defensive end with a manageable contract...you can expect a phone call from Frisco, Texas. Jerry Jones will have his wallet open and be ready to make you a deal.

IMO This might be a time where Jones aggressiveness could be justified...if the player could deliver two or three seasons of high production.

Of the top 20 sack leaders, only see 3 possibilities due to position and team record.
That would be Carlos Dunlap of the 2-4 Bengals, Brian Orakpo of the 3-3 Titans and Chandler Jones of the 2-3 Arizona.

Dunlap and Orakpo are on reasonable contracts with 2 years left after 2016.
So they are going to cost a bundle in trades.
Dont think Orakpo is that good, but not sure about Dunlap.

Chandler Jones' contract is done after 2016, so a reasonable target if Cardinals fall out of contention.
After monday night game, they could be 2-4 or 3-3.
He is a target but Cardinals could franchise him even if they fall out of contention.

I don't watch much football outside the Cowboys so I'll defer to your knowledge. I could see Jerry being willing to go big.. just spit-balling here but maybe a 1 and a 3...and then a 2 in the following year. That is if the Cowboys could get somebody special.

In addition to teams that might be looking to rebuild...there might be a team that feels it has a good defensive end but perhaps a younger cheaper one who might be nearly as good.

If we were to trade for orakpo someone should get slapped.

We could have signed orakpo in 2015 instead of that buffoon Greg Hardy and many of us wanted them too. He has 14 sacks as a titan. 14.

He was a great fit with our defense and was less expensive than hardy and is a good locker room guy as far as I know.

Wishful thinking. Not going to happen

In years past I would agree but I think because some of those moves have hurt the Cowboys costing us picks. Could Jerry pull a deal before the deadline? sure it is possible but I doubt it

It takes two parties to make a dance, and I don't claim to know the particulars of who is worth making a move for...

But Jerry is going to try hard, IMO. And when he gets his mind set on something....

Sabermetrics is the future and nothing will change that. It took over baseball and is strengthening its grip across all sports.

Actually Cleveland is doing exactly what the Chicago Cubs did under their SABR GM: be willing to completely tank and load up on draft picks.

The Browns want to lose this season.

It's not unlike what Jerry and Jimmy did right after they first got the the Cowboys.

This time of year there is a lot of speculation as the trade dead line nears. One rumor and it is a rumor would be Romo for Demarcus Ware. I don't see that happening

$10 million for two years of Sheldon Richardson in his prime is a steal. Unfortunately, with the Tyrone Crawford contract debacle, its very likely the team can't afford it.

A real shame.
