He wants someone he has experience with and trusts, or a grizzled steady veteran coach. He doesnt hire anyone else.

Experience with:
  • Jimmy (college roommates and teammate)
  • Switzer (his old college coach)
  • Campo (former DC)
  • Garrett (former player)
Grizzled steady veteran coach:
  • Parcells
  • McCarthy
  • Wade
The ONLY time he ever departed from this strategy and went with the hot new assistant coach on a winning team that he had no history with was Chan Gailey. It was also the shortest head coaching stint in Cowboys history.

So you can put away the Shanahan tree, the latest greatest SB assistant coach, and probably the veteran coach too since Jerry just tried it again and Belichick is off the market now. The Deion talk is for real. Kellen Moore is a safe bet especially since Jethro just tied himself up with Dak and CeeDee’s contracts. And if Zimmer wasn’t so burned out, he would probably have a shot too. My money would be on a familiar face.
I'll disagree slightly. Two of the eight were successful coordinators elsewhere that he had no experience with, just like two of the eight he had experience with but had never been a head coach. I understand throwing Phillips in with the "grizzled steady veteran" coaches, but Phillips had limited experience as a head coach and what experience he had had not gone well.

Truth is that Jerry has been all over the board:

2 successful college coaches (Johnson and Switzer)
2 successful coordinators with no association to Dallas (Gailey and Phillips)
2 Super- Bowl-winning coaches (Parcells and McCarthy)
2 players or coaches associated with Dallas (Campo and Garrett)

I think it depends on the outcome of their playoff run. If they lose spectacularly, I think he'll be looking for a job. Otherwise, I don't see him returning as a second choice to MM again after being fired the first time. Easy money in my mind will be Zimmer w/some cheap retread coordinators to surround him.

Yeah, Zimmer is a strong possibility as well. I don't know how much he wants it though. I thought he did ok after we got players from injury, but you can't have such a terribly ranked defense and somehow be promoted. Only in Jerry world lol.

How do you feel when the GM and Director of Player Personnel watch the same amount?
Terrible. Never a good sign when the top 3 football execs watch 0.0 hours of film. And no one ever presses Jerry or Stephen on the fact they don’t actually study for their job.

It would be a complete disaster.
That's one potential outcome. JJ ends up embarrassed and looking like an idiot. The other would be Deion proving he has what it takes to be a successful NFL HC. I'm good with it either way.

The Cowboys may end up being one of those teams that changes head coach every 3-4 years. Not a good time to be a Cowboys fan.

A beautiful disaster. I need to see this happen.
Yes, I agree. This would either really work, or it would be a complete and beautiful disaster of epic portion. Either way, it's what I want to see. And an utterly beautiful, complete disaster may be just the thing this team needs. A middling failure like McCarthy hasn't produced enough change.

So I say bring on Deion, he would be a ratings bonanza, and he just may be the kind of coach to help JJ in his GM role, and he MAY be able to lure his sons to Dallas (and they're certainly talented).

I tens to disagree.

I know some hate him because he talks a lot (trash) and has a lot of self esteem. But he is way deeper than you think.

Dont emotional judge people.

I would like to see some interviews happening. Bring in whoever is available and start the process. I know Jerry won’t and will hire the first guy who spends the night in his pj’s.

Deion will be the choice, and not just because of the first 3 letters in his name, but because he will fill the seats and the tv ratings will be off the charts, equaling more time Jerry is in front of the camera.

If Jerry had his way, the next Cowboys head coach would be... Jerry Jones. Who else fully understands his vision? He’d rock a headset that isn’t plugged in, call plays like “make it look dramatic,” and hold a press conference mid-game to blame the offensive line and the weather. Classic Jerry—always just “one player away", "around the rim" and "all in.”

Oh, and he would still be the GM because well, you know.
