Jerry's reasons

JJ went for the safe choice- safest available, anyway. Makes sense, and with a team that is ready to win NOW, probably the best choice. Any other choice had more possible negatives, and no sure positives. Garret tutors Romo, and the offensive philosophy will not change. BUT THE D GETS AGGRESSIVE!!!
AND THAT is the big news- and the big positive.

Good post.
I also think it had a large amount to do with Garrett.
He wanted Jason to get his opportunity and he wouldn't be able to do that with Norv running the offense.

Yep. A short-term hire who has no problem with Jerry running the show.

I would like it more if he was just here until we could get someone like Cowher or Fisher. But I believe he's just here until Jerry thinks Garrett is ready. Then we'll have a young offensive-minded coach who will be all too agreeable to having Jerry dictate personnel and staff.

I agree that it could be much worse (ie Norv), but I really can't get excited about Jerry pulling the reins back in and being the dominant prescence and decision-maker in Valley Ranch.

I wouldnt be surprised if it indeed turned out this way.

Only time will tell how much control Wade Phillips will have. I dont think it will be anything close to the kind of control Parcells had, as I dont think Phillips has enough skins on the wall.

I really cant wait to see Phillips' Approach to defense vs. Zimmer/Parcells Approach.

Got to hand it to Jerry. He had all the media going one way, then handed off for a reverse. Everybody from Mortensen to the local beat reporters were chasing the fake hand-off to Norv and were caught out of position when Phillips got the ball coming the other way.
The media were GOING to specualate. And Norv WAS in the mix. Turns out the speculation was wrong. I don't see this as a JJ manipulation.

Here are a few reasons why I think Jerry made this hire

-- Joy. If you've ever seen Wade Phillips coaching, he actually looks like he is enjoying his job. He laughs, he claps, he winks. He doesn't look like he's about to walk the Green Mile like the previous coach. Jerry found a partner who has as much joy for the game and his team as he has. I'm sure Parcells' sullen nature was a drag on the whole franchise at times.

Have to disagree here also. JJ is about winning football games. He'd have hired a guy on suicide watch if he was sure it would get him another Lombardi.

-- Jerry has invested a lot of money and first round picks in the defense and it was the part of the team that had the most problems. It's wise financially to get it fixed as soon as possible. A good business man protects his investments and there was some waste on the defensive side of the ball.
Maybe so. But there wasn't much waste before GE got hurt, was there? GE was to this year's D what FA was to last year's O.

-- Jerry was bound to keep Todd Bowles and Tony Sparano on the coaching staff, since he pretty much didn't let them search for other jobs. He promised them something. The Phillips hire makes sense. Wade can mentor young Bowles on the workings of the 3-4, and Sparano can look over Jason Garrett's freckled shoulder. What would Sparano and Garrett do if Norv would have been hired?
Great point. That's why I expected Phillips to be the man also.
-- It seems Wade Phillips was probably more agreeable to Jerry's terms, especially regarding the staff, than Norv. Not sure this is a good thing. We'll see.
Of course it's a good thing. It means no Norv.

-- Jerry obviously views this team as a Super Bowl contender, and as much as he likes Garrett or someone like Singletary, he just couldn't bring himself to hire someone with such little experience to take over a team that he feels is so close.
Right on.

-- Wade Phillips seems to be a natural-born interim coach. He's done it twice. He's the smart, calming, veteran guy who keeps things together while the next guy is being groomed. At some point in the next two or three years, Phillips will step out of the way and let Jerry hand the reigns over to one of the young guys (Garrett probably).

We'll see if this works. It could have been worse.

That's the plan it appears. Makes sense to me.

That pretty much sums it up. Nice.

I like the joy reason. I haven't seen Phillips in action really, but he seems cheery enough. ;)

I like the comments about the asistants - Sporano and Bowles. Bowles needs mentoring and can get that more from Phillips than any of the other head coaching candidates. And while Norv Turner brought the ability to mentor Garrett, Sporano can surely do that as well. Plus, by not hiring Norv, we can keep Sporano in his present role, because after all, our offense was not too shabby last season under his partial direction. Sporano also knows the persaonnel, is worth keeping, and can mentor Garrett just the same.

Lets be real. Jerry found another old guy who won't mind him looking over his shoulder every few seconds. How that translates into winning playoff games...nobody can say.

I'm glad I don't play poker with Jerry Jones.

I was bluffed. I was all set to accept the fact we were going with Norv.

The way some of these local writers (LeBreton, Galloway, Mick) were condescendingly lecturing the fans over why Norv should and would get the job was nauseating. I'm looking forward to reading their stuff now.

Nice post chief

but not sure I agree with the bolded part...if he hired Norv it would have been the same bad... the only other way it could have been worse is if the guy was dead:p:

If he's the animated, driving, supportive person he seems to be, I think that will go a long way toward overcoming the effects of Parcells' increasingly morbid and smothering personality - great talent finder but has lost his coaching skills.

I think it will be a good thing for the team.

Jerry's always going to pull the strings, it's just the way he is.

Jerry's act is the same and tiresome. I agree.

And, take a look at some of the points in his post:

Jerry was bound to keep Todd Bowles and Tony Sparano on the coaching staff, since he pretty much didn't let them search for other jobs. He promised them something.

I agree. Jerry is keeping Bowles and Sparano to go along with Garrett. Like I've said, Jerry is basically choosing the new HC's staff.

It seems Wade Phillips was probably more agreeable to Jerry's terms, especially regarding the staff, than Norv. Not sure this is a good thing. We'll see.

I agree. Jerry is looking for a HC who is agreeable, ie - happy to have a job and allow Jerry to dictate staff and personnel.

Wade Phillips seems to be a natural-born interim coach. He's done it twice. He's the smart, calming, veteran guy who keeps things together while the next guy is being groomed.

Jerry is just hiring someone until his handpicked guy is ready to take over.

Sounds an awful lot like Jerry's same ol tired act.

When ya hire a 60 year old coach ...... its obviouse that he will be replaced soon ....

That does not make him a puppet or the wrong man for the job ..... no matter how many times you repeat it.

Chief never suggested he was a puppet or the wrong man for the job.

I have no doubt that Wade is going to tutor Garret and some of our other Young coaches ..... but he may also be the best man to get us a Superbowl soon.

He does not have a history of being conservative on D ..... thank god.
