I believe he'll have one of 4 numbers.....21, 22, 33, or 34.

Doubt it's true. Mike McCoy was the equipment manager, and was responsible for giving out numbers.

Most likely.

It's just weird how some numbers are so protected while others aren't.

Open for business:

#54 Randy White, Bob Howley - any bum can wear it.
#43 Cliff Harris, Don Perkins - ditto (seriously?).
#28 Darren Woodson - may be off limits for defensive backs but open to running backs.
#17 Don Meredith - any bum can wear it.
#73 Larry Allen - unprotected.
#55 Lee Roy Jordan - ditto.
#20 Mel Renfro - double ditto.
#70 Rayfield Wright - triple ditto.
#33 Tony Dorsett - it's like he didn't even play for this team.
#88 Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin - Jackie Harris, really?
#94 Charles Haley - available to those deemed worthy.

On the shelf:

#74 Bob Lilly
#22 Bob Hayes, Emmitt Smith
#12 Roger Staubach
#8 Troy Aikman

I think he should have gone with 26m but that's just me. 21 reminds me too much of Randle.

The Cowboys better never ever let 22, 12 or 74 be used by anyone again.

I was wondering about 12 if we drafted Paxton Lynch who wears that number. Officially the team doesn't retire jerseys, and a scrub whose name I don't remember wore 12 after Staubach in the preseason in about '80 or '81, but didn't make the team. I would be surprised, however, if the team let any of those numbers be used again.

He said in an interview he wants 21...but it occurred me he might not what to seem presumptuous to ask for 22. If asked, I'll bet he would take it. My vote: 22. If no other reason than I would really like to see that again and he strikes me as the type of prospect that would try to rise to that occasion.

The name was Chuck Howley, not Bob Howley.

Also #88 was Ron Sellers. For those who don't remember or go back that far, he was the receiver who sealed the victory in Staubach's miracle come-from-behind victory in the 1972 playoff game against the 49ers. Staubach had sat out all year due to injury and Morton was struggling. Staubach came off the bench and won with two touchdowns and a field goal in something like 2 minutes. The win included a successful onsides kick and a touchdown pass to #88, Ron Sellers.

Brad Sham hated on giving him 22 when asked by Helman. Said you don't do that when talking about the nfl leading rusher.

Just shut up Sham, you old fart. Go eat your senior meal at Denny's and go to bed you geriatric f***! It would be an honor for the kid and I'm sure Emmitt would embrace it too.

Irvin welcomed it with Dez, I'm sure it wouldn't be any different.
