Jets DE John Abraham A Cowboy Next Year?

Jets DE John Abraham, who was slapped with the franchise tag ($6.67 million) this season and held out of training camp, is looking for a big payday this off-season. He has stayed healthy, and yesterday he proved once again what he can do when he's put in position to do what he does best -- rush the passer. The Jets have played with the lead in the second half only three times this season -- in each of their victories -- and Abraham has been a major factor in two of those games. The other was against Miami when he had a sack, a forced fumble, a pass defensed and five total tackles.

I bet Parcells Makes a Run for our second LEGIT Pass Rusher besides Demarcus Ware. Abraham at DE in the nickel and 4 man fronts with Ware blitzing as well.

We need to spend all of our $$ on Offensive line and WR but I bet we bring him in for a look...

I think we are now pretty much set on the D-Line. I don't think we spend the money necessary to bring Abraham.

I would be for it. I like Fujita, but do think we're lacking a pass-rushing presence opposite Ware.

Can he make the switch to OLB and also switch to the strong side?

I don't think Dallas will get into a bidding war for him. They will use that money to get a couple of other players of need. It would be nice though to have another pass rusher at the OLB spot.

We have far greater needs... ILB, OL, another young WR and please fix the FS position!

hmm, I would be looking at free agent offensive linemen. I am sure the Cowboys will target at least one for next season.

OL is a bigger problem, I just can't see us spending a whole lot more on an offensive line that has 3 guys with huge contracts. The more realistic approach to the OL problem is through the draft.

Throughout the off-season I was fairly convinced Bill would do whatever was necessary to get Abraham in here next season, but w/Spears and Ware coming on - even w/Ware dropping off some the past few weeks - I'm not sure Abraham is as high on the list anymore.

Couple the play of the rookies w/some glaring needs on the OL/LB positions I dont see Bill going all out for Abraham. I think he'll make a play, but I don't think the urgency is there anymore - although it would be sweet to see Abraham and Ferguson together again.

The problem with Abraham is that he probably cannot play our base defense unless he is playing the role of a true DE in which case we are playing a 4-3.

The other problem is he has a history of injuries, some substance issues (?DUI) and some attitude issues - would be scary to have him under contract with a big bonus.

One thing I wonder is whether Simeon Rice would be available - very good pass rusher who we could use in the nickel and might come cheaper than Abraham. think he comes with some baggage too.

They had a chance to get him and Howard last year. They obviously did not feel like they were the defference or Jones woulda written one more check last off season. On D, we dont need many more older players. Need to get the young studs coming off there rookie contracts.

I would love Abraham, but only if the salary cap didnt exist. Theres no way we are going to be the team to give him his "big payday" he is looking for.

I personally think LOLB is probably the 2nd biggest need on the team beside left tackle. I would take Abraham in a second. One of the benefits of having all young players and low round draft picks on the defensive front 7 is that the Cowboys should have some money to a key free agent. Ellis' contract is moderate. The only high dollar player on the roster at the moment is Glover, and he's on his way out. Ware and Spears are locked up for at least 4 more years. Canty for 3.

Abraham has and can play in the 3-4. He's roughly the same size as Ware. Parcells drafted him, and he played his rookie year with the Jets in Al Groh's 3-4.

He can play OLB but he can't play it well. He is best suited as an edge rusher at RDE in a 4-3 defense.

One of the big criticisms I have of our 3-4 is that we almost always rush Ware because none of the other LBs are particularly good pass rushers. We need to bring in another true OLB who can both rush the passer and perform the other standard LB duties - I don't think Abraham is that guy.

Some team is going to spend a lot of money for an awfully big headache on him but it is probably going to be a 4-3 team that can best utilize his skill.

I'd love Abraham in a 4-3 D. I'm not sure he can be as effective playing OLB at this point in his career. I would prefer someone younger and with more speed, but I certainly wouldn't be upset if we signed him.

I do agree we need another pass rusher from the OLB position. Basically, we need a Rosie Colvin/Vrabel to pair with our McGinnest (Ware)

I disagree about Abraham being at his best in a 4-3. He's a natural 6'4" 250-255 lbs. guy with the Lawrence Taylor/Derrick Thomas body frame. He ran a 4.41-4.45 coming out of the draft. He played outside linebacker in a 4-3 in college at South Carolina his senior year who would rush the passer in nickel formations. He's still in his prime at 27 years old (I would hope Ware isn't too washed up to play the position three years from now)

His injury problems always come up at the end of the season, which I think are caused by the grind of taking on 330 lbs. left tackles with his hand down every snap. That's not what the Parcells and the Jets drafted him to be. That's what Herm Edwards has forced him to be when he came in and implemented his 4-3 system.

Good information. Now do you think he can play the strong side? He seems more suited for Ware's position.
