The Panthers were known to be looking for an upgrade at quarterback this offseason, although it remains to be seen whether Darnold actually represents an upgrade, or whether he simply provides a backup to the incumbent starter, Teddy Bridgewater. There was some talk that the Panthers would swing for the fences with a huge trade for a franchise quarterback, but they may have decided that Bridgewater and Darnold competing for the job is the best they can do.

The Jets are reportedly getting a sixth-round pick in 2021 and a second-round pick and fourth-round pick in 2022 out of the deal.

Short of a trade up, this would seem to eliminate five QBs going before the Cowboys' pick.

I don't understand the trade. What can Darnold bring to the Panthers, that would give them a giant boost? He may not beat out Bridgewaters.

This ends the smoke I was hearing that the Jets were actually considering Pitts at #2 and keeping Darnold.

One less QB drafting team in the Top 10. That sucks for us.
Not necessarily. Denver needs a quarterback. Washington, Chicago and New England still might trade up. The problem is I can see Carolina drafting Surtain at 8 now.

guess Carolina did not believe a well regarded QB draftee would drop to their 1st rd slot - 8th overall.
So they made the move for a reputable young vet. it's 2022 second and 4th rounders that are gonna really count.

If Pitts is there at #8 that’s who I see them drafting. If not - they need to get Darnold someone to throw to or someone to block for him.

They also may be looking for a LB to replace Kuechley (Micah Parsons perhaps)

Now that the Panthers traded for a QB, other teams needing QBs will try to move up, IMO. I still think 4 will go before we draft because there are a lot of teams who need QBs.

First 3 picks QBs, the wild card will be the Falcons and Broncos. Denver might feel a need to move on from Lock.

I think Darnold with some talent around him and decent coaching will be all right. I seem to remember him doing fine against this team.
That’s not saying much.

Did Panthers recently put McCaffery on the block. I wonder if they could flip him for a high pick and/or a good receiver for Darnold. Darnold definitely hasn't lit the world on fire, but the guy has had a bare cupboard.

I knew there was absolutely no way the Jets were passing on Wilson. He’s a phenomenal talent at the most important position in all of sports.

I don’t know how anyone said they wouldn’t take him.

I think there’s a solid chance that he’s better than Lawrence. He’s going to be playing in the perfect offense for him and if they give him some weapons, he’s going to light it up.

As for the Panthers... Rhule is a really good coach (who I pushed for Dallas to hire) who is going to have Carolina turned around quickly, I think. If they weren’t in the same division as New Orleans and Tampa, I think they might play well enough to sneak into the playoffs. They’re well coached.

Christian McCaffery
DJ Moore
Robby Anderson

That's a big upgrade, weapons-wise

No way. They literally just had a full defensive draft last year and have just traded for a QB. They will surround him with one of the premium offensive talents available at 8. They will get their choice of some combination of Chase/Sewell/Slater/Smith/Waddle/Pitts. I think their aggressive owner is going to want to help his young QB and make his trade look good.
