Jihad Ward Video Scouting Report
http://profootballtalkline.com/nfl/...115802/jihad-ward-video-scouting-report.html/

Jihad Ward
  • Illinois Big Ten
  • 5.11 sec 40 yd dash
  • 20 reps bench press
  • 25″ verticle
  • 11″ broad jump
  • 7:38 sec 3 cone drill
  • 4.63 sec 20 yd shuttle
  • 6’5″
  • 33 7/8″ arm length
  • 207 lbs
  • 8 3/8″ hands
Just 24 years old the above information is from his NFL combine yet the (very) young man has kept himself fit as the Cowboys currently list him at 295 lbs. Drafted in the second round by the Oakland Raiders and miscast as a defensive end Ward doesn’t have that elite pass rusher jump the top flight DE’s in the NFL have. He’s not slow, he’s just not Von Miller quick and it’s a matter of mere moments and a fingernail’s distance that separate backups, starters, and elites.

Another mans junk is one man’s treasure and Ward may not have the skill set to excel as a pass rushing DE but he is perfect for what the Cowboys Rod Marinelli is looking for in a 1-tech for his defense. Rod wants his 1-techs to do more than just eat space. Marinelli wants them to be able to handle run stopping duties but also have “disruption jump” as well. In his D everyone can get to the QB or disrupt the running game from the offensive side of the ball and that job requirement suits Jihad Ward to a T...

Oh, and he's a second round drafted player...

Any mention of a 6'5" player as a "one technique" is off base. Especially one who has been repeatedly criticized as being a liability against the run.

The guy may have some ability and might earn a roster spot, but he's not a one technique candidate at all.

Bob Lilly...and he took on a three player situation and beat it.

1 tech? Has this actually been said?

Hes in the same mold as Hatcher and Irving, guys with length to rush the passer from the inside.

He's in the mold of a journeyman...and with the Cowboys, there is a quantity of success with just such players. Sounds to me, like a Marinelli type of player that becomes driven. Kind of like players under Lombardi in Green Bay. They drive quit out of their senses.

My question would be how important are these measurements?

  • 6’5″
  • 33 7/8″ arm length
  • 8 3/8″ hands

Agree. At 6-5, he'd have to weigh like 360.

Lily was the 3 tech.
POINT was that he defeated a triple team...what, that was two offensive tackles and a guard?

Get in the real world and not name calling...OK, bet, just WHAT height is BEST for a one technique?

Name calling? Where did that come from? I think you might be thinking of someone else, not my style.

The most effective 1 techs I've observed were around 6-0, maybe 6-1 and weighed around 300-325.

He is a 3 tech. Ive come to the conclusion Rod likes the 300 to 310 three tech for the quick lateral..It works when you have a 310 to 325 one tech but If your one tech cant hold up to the run, anchor or disengage then You cant force doubles to the inside long term..
