Jim Tressel Next Season

We've all seen it time after time. That look of hopelessness in the face of Bill Parcells during a game. Even when the game is still in doubt, he has that look like, "I just know something bad is going to happen". Many sportscasters have brought it up, including John Madden. Don't think for a minute that BP has magically changed because of what happened after the Panther's game. It was just an aberration. It won't be long before Parcells goes back to his "glass is half empty" mentality.

We are stuck with him this year, unless something unusual happens. I believe he will be gone after this season. He & JJ have had too many disagreements for them to patch things up. Plus, the brutal game of football has finally claimed one of its best.

That shouldn't keep us from dreaming of what can be for next year & for years to come. For my money, I would love it if Jim Tressel's team wins its second National title in 4 years, and he jumps to the NFL. If he does jump, here's hoping JJ will be the one to catch him.

Tressel is the anti-Parcells. He brings a positive, let's work together and go kick some butt attitude. Multiple championships on various levels proves he is a great evaluator of talent. More than that, he is a great motivator of people. Instead of referring to his players as "that player", or "number 88", he actually calls them by their God-given names. Even their nicknames at times. Tressel treats his players like men, not as assets who are only around to help him obtain his goals.

He also pays attention to a team's history & concerns. During his first speech after accepting the Ohio St. position, Tressel said, "It's only 185 days until Michigan". (I'm not sure of the exact number of days). The team & faculty went wild. Michigan had beaten OSU 8 out of the last 10 games, & OSU fans were tired of it. Since Tressel came on board in 2001, OSU has lost to Michigan only once.

It's time for a change, Cowboys fans. It's time to bring in a winner who expects to win every game. As of today, Tressel's record at Ohio St. is 62-13. I'll take that any day for the Cowboys, because Jim Tressel is a winner.

Parcells will be here next season if we're 9-7 or better.

Tressel is a college coach, not an NFL coach. The worst thing he could ever do would be to leave college.

Charley Weiss is a college coach. I think he could do okay in the NFL.

Oh, wait, he already has!

Ohio State is an NFL factory. I don't see why he wouldn't translate to the NFL.

My point didn't make it over the internet. I mean that his coaching style/personality/etc makes him more effective as a college coach. Kinda like Mack Brown - has success in colelge, but the NFL is probably not the best place for him.

Miami was an NFL factory. How is that working out for Butch Davis?

He went to as many playoff games with the Browns as Parcells has with the Cowboys. But let's not get off subject. I just want to know why you think Tressel is more fit for college than for the pros. What is it about his schemes, etc., that make you think this?

Pete Carroll was a successful NFL coach long before he went to New England. He wasn't really ever a college coach until he went to USC in 2000. That's not exactly a good comparison.

I guess you're right. I mean, what could a coach with a 62-13 record do that a .500 coach like Parcells couldn't. By the way, wasn't Jimmy Johnson a college coach who won in the NFL? Seems he won both a national championship AND the Lombardi Trophy. Huh, I guess you're right, though.

You mean in his only other head coaching job in the NFL in 1994 with the NY Jets when he was 6-10?

Just the way he treats his players, his personality, scheming coaching style, etc. It's really just my opinion - I could be wrong. He just strikes me like the kinda guy who is a great college coach but whose style just wouldn't translate to the NFL.

Just because college coaches might be great doesn't mean that they will make it in the NFL.
