Booger didn't let Johnson get away and he didn't fire him or even push him away, he was only going to be there for a certain amount of time and I doubt it would have gone past that 94 season.
I don't think he ever looked at any of that as long term. Guys like Jimmy Johnson and Dick Vermeil give so much of themselves to something and they become spent. It's not a job or even a passion, it's an obession.
Jimmy is the type guy that wants that challenge and the Cowboys had he stayed and won 3 in a row, he would have left anyway. There was no more challenge to stay inland.
I didn't know his son was going through some problems, knew about his Mom passing, but that explains how he could just walk away after losing a game 62-7, it was no longer in him.
