Watching youtube vids is a hard way to evaluate defensive backs. The all 22 is the only fair way to evaluate a db. He is still raw, but impressed enough to get himself drafted. Give the kid a chance.

And all you can find are two games for Wilcox and even then its hard to see him because he played a lot of halves and single high.

I watched the Georgia v Georgia Southern game because it was an entertaining game and it is apparently easy to dislike Georgia but he played deep the whole game. Couldn't see anything.

I was a Phillip Thomas fan, we'll see. The club loves him and I'd hope they know more than I do.

Its not just that, the guy looked like the best safety at the senior bowl.

THIS. A million times, THIS. Odd that you don't see or hear more about this. Its one thing for a guy to play one year at safety against mediocre competition at a small school.

Its another thing entirely to do so at the Senior Bowl against the best there is.

Seriously, anyone find something really positive
looking on tape. He's the only player I didn't think
could come in and get significant playing time. The others
all look like talented players to me with a lot of upside.

I saw one play that looked like he demonstrated excellent
hand-eye coordination to knock a ball away only to find out
that it was called a penalty. Didn't look like anything special as
a tackler in the videos I saw either.

Let's see who to believe...Scouts who do this professionally and most likely have access to video of every snap this kid has taken and have looked at him indepth for more than a year and talked with his coaches and probably him.....Or.....casual fan who has looked for 3 days on the internet for limited video.......Hmmmm...tough choice...:bang2:

Wait...now I see it. 4th string running back. Back up returner.

Anyway, hope I'm wrong...

No you don't. You came in here to make a statement, not to have a conversation or listen to what anyone else has to say. If you've made up your mind, then why ask what others like about him?

Dang, I've never seen that Matt Johnson tape. He looks a lot better than I thought he was.

I wanted Phillip Thomas or Josh Evans a bit later but the more I see of this kid and understand the amount of time at the position it all makes sense when considering his potential.

He's probably the best athlete out of the top 10 safety bunch when you consider his size to strength to speed ratio and he's obviously a quick learner.

It's all highlight video's out there on him so you don't get to see if he's had some poor coverage or bad tackling angles but one thing certainly shows up.

This guys presence is on the field and he seems to be around the ball just at the right time.

Whether it's in the air he gets up there and out competes other jumpers.

When the balls being carried by foot, this guy just doesn't tackle, he literally trucks over the ball carrier like Bruce Carter does.

This could be 1 very physical secondary and when you do that back there, balls pop out, turn overs happen.

Trust me, Frederick was Callahan's kid, and this guy is Kiffin's kid and I'm fine with that.

Still wanted Damontre Moore somewhere though.

Wilcox's highlight tape from Georgia Southern is just generally hard to watch and understand what is going on with poor quality and all of that.

If you really want good tape on him then watch the senior bowl 1 on 1 drills. I think he looked really nice in that video.

I love the way he returns kicks as well; he just freight trains straight ahead and dares people to tackle him. That's playing football with balls.

The senior bowl was telling. He certainly has the physical tools and I suspect he has the desire, but he is somewhat raw. In my opinion, his success will depend on how well they develop him.

He's definitely got work to do, but the fact that he switched over from offense and only played safety for one year and is already as good as he is the most telling about him for me. I really like the promise he brings.

Also, Kiffin is basically going to be able to mold him however he wants. JJ does not have many old habits at safety he will have to break, and Kiffin can teach him how to play his style and his style only.

this is key
he will be learning from kiffin and marinelli, 2 of the best defensive minds in football (not rob ryan thank god)

You must be kidding me. Matt Johnson's tape and JJWilcox's tape are worlds apart. Matt Johnson is a major player in this video. Laying wood, causing fumbles and making interceptions.

MJ was taken in the 4th too. I have hopes for him his year.

I like Wilcox. He may not be as ready as Johnson was when he was drafted but I think he will be a good player for us. He will contribute some in the short term and with a little bit of seasoning I believe he can be a heck of a player. In fact, I see a lot of similarities in their style of play between the two players.

Watching Matt Johnson's clip gets me pumped up. I remembered that he had a knack for the ball but I had forgotten how violent of a tackler he was in college. I like the way he gets through traffic at full speed to locate the ball carrier and make the hard tackle (I also see the same quality in Wilcox based on limited tape). I hope he is back at full strength.

I think Wilcox' ceiling is probably Earl Thomas, maybe Dashon Goldson.

My favorite thing about him is that he is all over the field, one of his games that's on Youtube is against...some blue team from a playoff game Youngstown maybe. He's all over the field making tackles. High effort guys do that, but you also have to be smart and instinctive to get there. He will be a good player. Plus, you can even see it in the vid posted, he definitely plays right to the whistle, if not past it. Watch him make those sidelines tackles, there's no letting up. Goes right in line with the Frederick pick, and if he sees the field, it could change the culture of the defense.

Oh how I miss that guy............been YEARS since we've had one of those. I go poop-smearing nuts with returners that run 80 yards and gain six.

watching the clip I think Wilcox has some talent now he has to bring that to the NFL. I look forward to seeing what he can do in camp and pre-season same with Johnson whom we did not see at all last year.

Like any young player coming in he is a question mark. I don't mind the pick at all, now it is up to Wilcox to come in and prove he was the right choice.

I liked Swearinger (or maybe Cyprien) in early rounds or, preferably, Phillip Thomas later...and I thought Thmas would fit really well in a Kiffin defense. He would have been my pick in the 4th.
It does not at all mean it would have been right, but that was my take, pre-draft.

And I agree with the comment in an earlier post about Matt Johnson. He is a natural. I hope it translates.
