JJ Wilcox will be our starting FS, Stephen Jones pretty much says

I think most of us are intrigued by Wilcox's potential but befuddled by why a less talent like Heath played over him last year and our excitement over Wilcox is always tempered by the latter point. Well, based on these statements by Stephen Jones, I'm pretty much back on that wagon full time and now see safety as an afterthought in this draft. If a guy who had only played safety for 1 year in college was ready to be penciled in as a starter until the biggest loss of his life, then an extra year of NFL experience and more time removed from that catastrophic event should pretty much cement is place in the starting lineup. I've seen signs of him capable of being a FS like the pass to Desean Jackson that he broke up in the end zone and the way he almost caught Victor Cruz from behind.

“J.J. Wilcox had an outstanding training camp,” Jones said. “The day his mother passed, he was actually promoted to be the starter. Everybody deals with adversity in different ways, especially a heartfelt loss like losing your mother. No one knows how anyone’s going to respond to that, and obviously he was very close to his mother who had been sick, and had taken wonderful care of her and was obviously just a terrible, gut-wrenching loss for him. I just think it took him a while to respond. But toward the end of the year, we were starting to see flashes of the J.J. that we saw in camp.”

Unless a first round talent falls to us in the 2nd round I expect him to start week 1. This defense has more holes than one, and you cant fix all of them. Somewhere you have to roll the dice, and hope a player can improve upon last years production. J.J. Wilcox is a prime candidate to improve in 2014.

Not to highjack this thread but in that piece is this nugget:
“I know everybody kind of smirks, but one day if Matt Johnson stays healthy, then we’ll finally get to look at him,” Jones said. “Hopefully, that’ll turn for him. Hopefully Matt’s going to prove you guys wrong and a lot of people wrong and stay healthy and be the guy we thought we drafted out of there two years ago.”

If there is a position on defense that should be able to improve this season without actually picking up new talent, I believe it's the safety positions. I think that we should be able to focus on the DL and LB corps in the draft and beyond, and roll the dice on Wilcox and/or Matt Johnson this year.

Of course, if a great safety talent falls to us in the early rounds of the draft, it's hard to pass that up.

OK, we can safely ignore those mocks that have us taking a safety at 16. I would be happy if we moved up a few places for Donald. (I think the price would be too high to get up into Mack territory.)

Looking forward to it, I don't think they were ever seriously considering Pryor or Dix at 16.

Agreed, with all this talk about how the 3 tech is the most important position in the Tampa 2 (I'll take their word for it, I'm not a Tampa 2 expert) and how Donald would be a perfect fit for us, I think it might be worth it to move up a few spots to grab him if he's still there.

he just had bad luck last season, after coming off his best game ( Philly game) he got injured in practice and pretty much lost his spot

I'm with you on this, but I'd add, that while still a need, a Safety would be a luxury compared to the ardent, desperate need on the DL at this point. Despite their age, Ware and Hatcher are leaving huge holes on that line.
