Joe Buck & Troy Aikman had an argument surrounding their ESPN contract situations

Can he evaluate talent? No.

Does he know how to run an organization? No.

He was a great player, though somewhat overrated, a million years ago. That qualifies him for nothing. That has zero to do with a front office job.

That's like saying Bill Belichick would have been a great linebacker because he was a great defensive coordinator.

We need a Howie Roseman or John Schneider, not a token former player from a time long past.
I'd like to know what YOUR "qualifications" are for making such an assessment.

If it's just your opinion...that's fine. But you'll need a resume if you want to be taken as serisouly as it appears you do.

From the twitter comments

This is probably what ESPN is looking for. Him or Kelce.

I don’t particularly care who’s commentating but every possible show featuring Pat McAfee is getting a bit out of hand. He isn’t that good, nobody is. Nobody needs 24-hour coverage presented by the same guy.

I can’t imagine Aikman and Buck not working together but that is exactly the type of idiot move ESPN would make. I’d prefer they keep Aikman so Buck can go back to doing the World Series.

Romo and Buck could work on MNF.

Aikman as GM or President of Football Operations would be the Last Great Move by Jerry.

There’s no question Aikman would establish a new culture of accountability, leadership and doing things the right way. It wouldn’t be the emotional reactionary methods currently employed by Jerry and Stephen.

Aikman would build a team with vision and direction and hire people who o carry out that plan. Former players have had tremendous success in this role; Ozzie Newsome, John Lynch, John Elway just to name a few. It wouldn’t guarantee a SB, but it would be a massive step in the right direction.

I've run several organizations and departments before and I know what that generally involves. But I wouldn't know the first thing about rolling out a new IT database. Your top salesperson isn't geared to run your operations team or be your president just because they can close a big deal with a client.

Throwing lots of passes to Michael Irvin and handing off to Emmitt Smith doesn't mean he can run a football team from the front office. Neither does commenting on football games or financing a new beer brand and being its top spokesman.

He's never even worked in a football organization before as a coach or front office staff. He wants to, but nobody is calling.

Sure, he could do a Nolan Ryan gig and be a figurehead to parade around, but he's not the least bit qualified to run a personnel department or manage the complexities of building a football culture. Jerry is even more qualified by resume than Troy, and we know what a joke that has been.

You need someone who's worked up through an organization for many years, not just some football player you know who you loved watching play 30 years ago.

Interesting takes. They may very well be correct. Then again, they may not.

Curious what information you base these observations on?
For one, Troy ran one of the most basic offenses the NFL has ever seen. He wasn't checking in and out of plays like today's quarterbacks. The game is very different today. So I don't want anyone from the 90s in the weeds of player personnel or development UNLESS they've gone the coaching or organization route for many years after their playing days.

Curious, what exactly makes you think Troy could evaluate and compare 4 different offensive guards or outside linebackers to make a third-round decision? What does he know about managing a salary cap or negotiating with an agent and structuring a long-term contract? Does he know how to speak business at a level necessary for the hundreds of companies from different industries and purposes that the Cowboys do business with?

The answer to all that is....he's not qualified beyond just being a figurehead with a cushy salary that makes public appearances.

Prescott in the news with the engagement flame out.
Romo in the news for drunk driving.
Aikman in the news for almost tossing Buck out of the booth.

Tough year for Cowboys QB's. Staubach and White might want to just stay inside and ride the rest of this year out.
RIP Quincy Carter's high school coaching career.

Aikman's contract expires after Super Bowl LXI in February 2027. And he thought he would get an extension by now. He has said he wants to stick with Buck too. 25 years is a long time. Hopefully Aikman won't punch Joe in the face on-air and this gets settled.
Joe Buck is a d-bag. I wouldn't mind seeing Aikman throw hands with him.

I'm saying--if he wasn't Jack Buck's boy, he never would have gotten a sniff.

The greatest play by play guys have a way of describing the action in such a way that it enhances what you are seeing with your eyes. It's not about them. It's about the action. Al Michaels. Jim Nantz. Verne Lundquist. Keith Jackson. et al.

Whenever I am listening to Buck, I get the feeling he is trying to make sure everyone knows how awesome he is. It's about him.
Always had that same vibe from Bob Costas as well.

Buck got his shot because of his surname IMO. He's an unlikeable dick and detracts from almost every broadcast he's a part of with his smarmy elitist tone.
I think he's better than you say because he has a great cadence to how he calls games, especially big moments.

However, he is an insufferable and arrogant you-know-what at times, and I hate they way he swivels his head when he talks. Ugh.

He carries Troy though. I've always wanted Moose in the booth with him for the big games. Daryl Johnston actually says something.

I happen to believe you are being bamboozled.

Troy has the better football mind. But he has a certain...awkwardness at times.

Buck is just the smooth talking shyster.

To be clear, I'm not on the "Hire Aikman for GM tomorrow" bandwagon

I don't necessarily think he is automatically qualified to be a general manager simply because he was a Hall of Fame player and Cowboys Legend

I'm also saying I'm not willing to dismiss him out of hand as unqualified without hearing from both sides as to why they do or don't think he might be a good GM and that's why I was asking you those questions. I'm genuinely curious what other people's thoughts are

My understanding is that he is a very cerebral and extremely intelligent person and also a type A hard driving personality

Those character traits alone make him somewhat appealing to me to at least want to learn more about his other potential qualifications

Roger's impeccable character will never be questioned

But that's Buck's job, like all play-by-play announcers. He's actually quite polished, and he worked hard at it far beyond being Jack's kid. In fact, I think he's better than Jack was in a lot of ways. But yeah, he's a bit much at times.

Keith Jackson had a very specific delivery. Super folksy. He could be a bit arrogant, too, Al Michaels is tremendous with his New York radio guy approach. Pat Summerall was the best ever, along with Verne Lundquist, and he delivered with so little dialogue. He and Brookshire were the best team ever, even though they drank like sailors through it all. Brent Musberger was also arrogant as hell, but also really damn good. Brad Nessler is just as good.

Bob Costas grates on my nerves. I don't think he's good at all for games with his preachy Napolean-syndrome mannerisms. He just blathers on with big words and his clear agenda all game long. Yuck. Much better at the studio however.

The commentators on the other hand.....very few good ones, and most need to say far less, not more.

Troy is fine, but ESPN isn't paying big money for fine, nor should they. Now, if they rollout McAfee, I'm going to have to turn the sound off.

Okay...that's fair. They have different jobs...so not sure why you were comparing them so closely.

From some of your other comments...it seems Troy offends your sensibilites in several ways. That's fine too.
