Video: Joe Milton - All-22 Film Review

Not to take away from Milton's performance, he did show that he can play at least against lower level NFL talent. A few notes though...

  • This was a meaningless game for Buffalo that saw them rest several starters.
  • He did have what would have been a league leading 3.33 (pff) or 3.63(nfl.com) second time to pressure if he had enough snaps to qualify.
    • Part of this was excellent protection from his OL, but part of this is also his ability to get out of the pocket and buy time
  • Milton faced an insane 44% blitz percentage. Given his time to throw with such a high blitz percentage his high completion percentage should not be a huge surprise
Overall this just isnt a realistic game that Milton would see as an actual starter. He operated largely from a clean pocket. He had a ton of 1st read throws. I'm also seeing a lot of basic coverages from the video and Buffalo seemed to try to confuse him more through pressure and delayed blitzing than through disguising coverages.

Still the arm strength is very real. The mobility is very real. Tough to really hold anything against Milton from this tape, I just think Milton still has a lot of boxes to check before we can label him a potential starter. Still the guy should be able to be a legitimate QB2 from day 1 based on his physical skills alone. Hes sort of the exact opposite of a Cooper Rush.

What’s wrong with that? Without reps Josh Allen worked his way to the accuracy he has now. His first 2 years he had massive question marks as the interception king.
Similar situation with Dak. Not as much from an INT standpoint, but overall accuracy issues. Where Milton is going to struggle to get much sympathy from an accuracy development standpoint is the guy is already 25 years old and played 6 seasons in college. At 25 years old the expectation is that you're pretty close to fully developed. There is a really good chance that what we see from Milton this year will be about what he will be for the rest of his career.

The Dallas Cowboys traded for Joe Milton, who has huge potential, lets break down his tape together. I think he is better than any QB we would have gotten on Day 3, and with him being 26 years old - he is mature enough to grow into our QB2.

Let's not forget Dak's injury history. I know Bob commented on 3 players in the last decade including Dak, Purdy and Cousins who have made starters as Day 3 picks. Dak's whole career has come from backing up and winning a starting spot via injury. Romo was an UDFA - this kid has a rocket arm and just needs some better decision making.

What is his floor?

I’m excited to see Turpin and Milton is the preseason. A guy who can throw it 80 yards and one of the fastest guys in the league. Should be fun
That is exactly why we needed a strong arm, doesn't have to be that accurate 45 yards down the field, just put the rock out of reach of the defender and WR that can get maybe there in time, speed can really be used when you have a strong arm to match.

Sounds like we have become Raider fans. Al Davis would be proud.

True but I wouldn't be upset if we could stumble upon a little bit of a Cam Newton to be honest.
What is the cost for high ceiling potential, I ask you this with respect.
I see Milton as similar to Lance. I don’t see the upside at all. I think they could grab Gabriel in the 5th round. Better option.

We can still grab Gabriel in the 5th, there is certainly no reason to think that we are done developing talent at the position.
Keep throwing darts until you finally get lucky and hit the bullseye hopefully.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting lucky occasionally.

We've spent so many years neglecting the position, that I don't think we should be against having two young developmental QBs on the roster.
