I was listening to NFL radio and Gil Brandt was on talking about value picks for teams. He reported that the Cowboys were ready to pick Montana in the 3rd and had him the highest rated player that was still left on the board but Landry said that they already had 3 veteran qbs and could not carry a 4th. He said so we picked Doug Cousbie instead which turned out well but imagine what could have been if it was Montana. He also said any time you get a qb after the 1st rd that can be your franchise qb and play well for 10-15 yrs at a high level is a value pick. Thought it was interesting about Montana being a Cowboy. Never heard about this before.

I forgot what I was watching, but yeah, I heard about this some time ago. That said, Landry had a good point. It was the 3rd round and Tom didn't have a crystal ball.

The real mistake was not drafting Aaron Rodgers. We passed on him twice in the first round. Who did we have as a starter? An aging Drew Bledsoe. At that point in his career he was just keeping the seat warm. Rodgers was considered a 1st round talent.

Also in the 1985 draft, both the 49ers and Cowboys were highly interested in the prolific pass catcher out of Mississippi Valley State -- Jerry Rice.
Then on draft day, the 49ers traded their first two picks to New England for the Patriots' No. 16 first-round selection.
The Cowboys, who had kept close contact with Jerry Rice, had the No. 17 pick.

The 49ers snagged Jerry Rice, and the Cowboys got defensive end Kevin Brooks.

I saw that too. The Cowboys thought they had Rice and no other team knew about him. When he kept falling they were sure they were going to get him until the Niners came in just before them and snatched him. Walsh did not know anything about him until he saw a sports report on the local news that he was watching in his hotel room when the Niners were playing the Saints. He told everyone in the organization that this was the guy we are drafting and the rest is history.

Fun to play that what if scenario. Would Montana take the Cowboys further than White? I think its plausible the Cowboys could have went to atleast 1 more super bowl in the 80s. But what impact would that have on the 90s dynasty? Maybe Landry's coaching era extends, maybe Jones isnt able to buy the team? Or maybe Montana justs sits on the bench behind White and never gets an opportunity?

Bill Walsh had just been hired as the niners Head Coach. His West Coast Offense allowed Montana to becomes an all time great despite having below nfl-average arm strength.

Defenses were not prepared for the Walsh/Montana offense.

Montana with the Cowboys probably wouldn't have had great success.

The Cowboys owner Clint Murchison got into financial trouble in the following years and eventually had to sell to Bum Bright in 84. Shortly thereafter got into financial trouble. The Cowboys budget was limited for much of the eighties.

.....nothing hurts worse than randy moss and I liked Greg Ellis he was an awesome defender

Steven Jackson is another

Yeah the Randy Moss pass was a tough one to swallow. Having Irvin and Moss for a season, two 1st round picks back for Galloway would have been huge. However, I wonder if Moss would have flourished as much here? Carter was a big reason for his early success and keeping him straight. Wouldn't have that in Dallas. Aikman would have played 3 seasons with him, but after that we entered the dark years of starting QBs. Perhaps 98 and 99 it could have pushed us further?

Tex shramm said it was his biggest mistake ever letting Landry talk him out of taking Montana. When Tom started waivering about taking aikman with the first pick, tex put his foot down and made it clear aikman would be the pick.

I'm not trying to snarky when I ask this, but how old are you, and how long have you been a Cowboys fan?
This has been an item of fan knowledge for quite some time.

Perhaps it might not of necessarily been deemed as all that high of priority in the obtaining & retention of such trivialities to him as well as myself, as this is news to me as well, although, to be honest? I'd all but entirely tuned- out& dropped in,with my back turn to the opposite direction of that suckage 80's decade.

That supports my post that it was Landry that killed the Elway deal. Landry wanted to keep Danny White (who just played in 3rd straight NFC Championship game) and felt starting or dealing with a rookie with a veteran 1983 Dallas Cowboys team did not fit his purpose.

So that's what happens when Landry had too much influence on personnel moves we past on Montana and Elway.
