Joey Bosa “didn’t win one rep” at first NFL practice

If anyone wants to know just how much better NFL players are than college football players, ask Joey Bosa.

At Ohio State last season, Bosa was one of the best players in college football, which is why the Chargers took him with the third overall pick in the draft. But at his first NFL practice, Bosa was one of the worst players on the field.

“It was completely different,” Bosa said, via the San Diego Union-Tribune. “You’re going against monsters out there. . . . The first day I didn’t win one rep in pass rush probably.”

Bosa said, however, that he already feels like he has improved enough that he can start to play his game.

“Now, I’m really starting to get a hang of it again. My moves are coming back,” Bosa said.

Chargers coach Mike McCoy said Bosa’s athleticism has already made the coaches say “wow.” They expect him to be a great player, but no draft pick steps on the field and is great at his first practice.

That's Bosa being humble and driven.
The guy is off the charts gung-ho and always expects the best from himself.
Notice that HE was the one saying he didn't win any reps.

I'm not saying that he was (or wasn't) worth the 3rd overall pick, but I bet he ends up making several Pro Bowls in his career.

Pro bowls are usually given to sack leaders. He is unlikely to be a sack leader.

Yeah, I've heard that a lot over the last few months on this site.
The fun part is that we'll know either way in a few years.

Probably.

Having said that, I didn't think JJ Watt would be a big sack guy in the NFL either.

He averaged 5.75 sacks per season during his time at Wisconsin.

Watt's #1 attribute seems to be to be motor. Seems to be Bosa's #1 attribute is motor as well.

Motor and the fact he's bigger, stronger and faster than Bosa.

But other than that...

He has plus athleticism, dominated college football, and obviously works hard at his craft as shown by his bevy of moves and consistent technical improvement.

The best explanation I get for his failure is this 'good not great' emotional take. You have anything better than that?

He's not faster and he was 2 years older coming out than Bosa is now. He was also a lot less productive.

This motor thing seems nonsensical to me. He got double and triple teamed constantly and didn't let up. The worst thing I have seen him do is not chase downfield throws consistently. Only DL I've seen consistently do that is my man Ken Bishop.

Everyone knew Bosa was nothing special, except the Chargers, apparently.

He was the first non-QB picked so you cannot even speak to what the first two QB desperate teams thought of him. Envermind a consesnus all american and all Big 12.

Youre just another of a long line parroting Broaddus 'good not great' group think.

Lol
Now, now, Bob. Many of the scouting services had him as the very best prospect in the entire draft and pretty much all had him ranked in the top 3.

I do get why some would be wary of him that early though.

Still, for example, I'm not sure any scouting service had Elliot ranked above Bosa. Must have been some, but none come to mind.

This whole thread is silly because:

  1. HE is the one that was criticizing himself
  2. The coaches sounded impressed and, most of all
  3. It was his very first NFL practice and was in shorts

Silly
