This ridiculous, Jerry Jones-produced dog & pony show has all been about keeping the Cowboys in the news. To that aim, it has succeeded spectacularly. As a meaningful football story, it's a nothing-burger.

If something does get done, I’m betting it’s effectively just for this season. Maybe an option for ‘23, but no guarantees.
Who knows what's in Jerrys mind, but what the point of just this season? Sounds like a realistic chance the guy wont play at all this year, and even if he does it wont be until playoff time. Maybe im off base here, but I would rathe roll with what we have instead of experimenting with a new player in the postseason.

I have no issue with it either way. I would not mind getting OBJ but it really comes down to the terms of the contract. Cowboy need to have some protection in this deal given the injury.

OBJ should try to get healthy, and that means waiting for the offseason before playing, if then. Signing OBJ would be a next year thing, not a this year thing. It's always been that way for anyone familiar with how knees heal. Getting all twisted up because of the "drama" is foolish. Even if OBJ plays in the during the post-season games, he'd be a bit player - a decoy mostly. It would be foolish to spend heavily and risk additional injury if he's not truly healthy. I have no problem with signing OBJ to a deal for next year, and even a multi-year deal. But counting on him for this post-season is not something I've ever done. James Washington and Tyron Smith are going to be big improvements to the offense, and the Cowboys have to consider their needs at CB if Joseph falls on his face in the next couple of weeks. And there is the niggling issue of a bad rushing defense to solve.

OBJ is just drama, all for the media and cameras. He might be a substantive addition to the team for next season, but not this one.

I can certainly see your point.

My position is that if he needs a few weeks to get up to speed, why not have that happen in Dallas?

Get familiar with the quarterback and offense and be ready for a playoff run, making the team even stronger at the best possible time.

Put a team option in the deal that if they like what they see, they pick it up and pay him for 2023 or beyond.

I think that’s a win-win scenario.

idk was Patrik no c said does make some sense too…sign him now so you don’t have to compete with these other teams in the offseason.

ir him until the postseason maybe

And if he can actually come in and practice I wouldn't be opposed to it. Still dont love it just because I think the timeline is already pretty tight, but the logic makes sense. My entire thought process was this should have all happened 3 weeks ago and he could be in with the team creating some chemistry with players/coaches even if just attending meetings. Even having him exposed to the Cowboys medical staff the last several weeks would probably have been beneficial. I think we are just too late for a guy to come in rehab for 2-3 weeks with the team then flip the switch and hit the field in a game. If he can come in and do some limited work in practice, maybe even participate in 7v7's it could work.

team option

My guess is that that would be the... or at least, "a"... sticking point...

Seems to me, a team option is more likely to be a big number based on the optimal performance imaginable... but can the cap allow for that?

Whereas, a player option is more likely to be a small number based on minimal performance, and that lets OBJ get back in the market for something more.

My guess is that the player option... option... is more likely.

I wouldn't be surpised if they are working out the structure of the contract. He knows his knee is not ready yet, the cowboys know it, other teams know it. But if they can get something in place that protects both parties then that is a good thing, even if he can only play next year. We fans are focused on this year obviously but JJ still has to consider the future. While I would love a healthy OBJ this year, I am still happy with him next year.
