The Cowboys didn't just let Murray walk. They offered to pay him 6.5million per year to stay.
Why would they offer so much money to a back if they were so confident with his backup?

Of course they wanted him back to an extent---probably for team chemistry over anything else. They didn't get into a bidding war for him and they were never really aggressive in finding a replacement once he left.
