Julius struggling?

Funny how he is struggling but he's still on pace for almost 1300 yards. Funny how he is struggling but Parcells says he is still the main back.
Funny how he is struggling but he is, and according to Parcells will remain the starter and get the majority of the work.

I love our rb rotation, and don't think it needs to be touched at all. One thig that people need to keep in mind is that the majority of Barber's carries are on 3rd down or at the end of a game. Julius is wearing teams down and Barber is mopping up after him. That's not a knock to MBIII, but rather an honest observation of what is taking place. If Julius were getting those carries he would be doing the same things with them. It is a lot tougher to run on 1st down when the other team knows it's coming than it is on 3rd and 8 with the other team in the nickle.

And that is EXACTLY what BP said in his PC today if anyone chose to listen!

I can't help but wonder why Julius has only averaged at least 4 YPC four times this season, and hasn't done it since Week 6 against Houston.

It's a fair question, but there is a logical answer as well. JJ is playing against standard defenses geared to stop the run while MBIII is playing mostly against the nickle. JJ is in the game in running situations while MBIII is in in situations where the defense has to think pass first.

I will say that I think JJ is underutilized in the passing game. He has dramatically improved hands from his rookie year, and when he is in the open field he is extremely dangerous. Without looking it up, I'm not exactly sure what his yards per catch is, but I believe it is still around 15 which is phenominal. Defenses don't usually account for him in the passing game so when he catches the ball he is usually open. Plus, as I said before, when he has the ball in the open field he is an absolute beast.

Julius is averaging 4.0 ypc and is on pace for 1300 yds or so. He would be the first back since Emmitt to go over a 1000 yards. 1000 yds may seem meaningless nowadays, but it is a marker to team success.

I've got no problems with Julius' production. I hear people whine about Julius' vision and yet on game day, after almost every run, I hear people say, nice run by Julius, or good run by Julius.

dude, why do you need to call it whining? This is a discusssion board. The production of the starting rb is a valid topic. Just because you dont agree with something does not mean the other person in "whining"

1. I'm a lady, hence the word "Girl" in my username.

2. Whether I agree or disagree with something, if something comes across as whining, then why not call it that? Seeing as how you aptly put it, this is a discussion board. And you're right, it's definitely a valid topic, but I was not calling the OP a whiner, but I've seen enough posts regarding this topic which would come across as whining. Don't get stuck on one word out of a whole post. I could've said, complained, moaned and groaned, or simply said talk. Who cares about that one word when the whole point of my post is that he's producing.

He hasn't had what we as fans would call a breakout game similar to his '04 production, but he's been solid. I wouldn't call him an elite running back at this point in his career, but he's been very good this year.

And while Parcells is given credit for Romo, people complain about the job he's done with Julius. They think he's taken something away from him. When you listen to Parcells, Julius is doing exactly what Parcells wants. He knows what he needs to do. He may misread a guy and get tackled earlier than the play might have called for, but when he goes to the sidelines and Parcells asked him what he saw, he tells him.

Realistically this is Julius first full year without any game-sitting injuries. I look forward to next year to see what he'll be able to do after a whole season and more knowledge of the game.

I thought I read where Parcells said he was trying to save something towards the end of season with JJ.

That's not really that surprising. Julius has played in 32 career games and has only avg. at least 4.0 ypc in 11 of those games. His career ypc is only 4.0, which is very average. Jones is a solid back, but I think it's apparent he's not ever going to be a star in this league. After his rookie year, many thought he was going to be a special RB, but I don't see that type of ability from him. Nevertheless, he is doing a good job and it has been nice to see him stay healthy so far. However, I am glad the Cowboys have Barber to complement Jones and form an excellent 1-2 punch.

It seems that Julius is struggling playing with Tony Romo. Dont even know how this is possible...
maybe cause jj is just an average running back.

He has been directing him to attack or take on the safeties and they are past the line of scrimmage. I take that to mean you hit the hole and stay there until you get to the safeties, what do you take it to mean?

You really think Parcells is telling his guys that if they get past the line of scrimmage to make sure they don't get past the safeties ........ ?

Here's the scenario.

Julius: Coach, what should I do if I run through the line of scrimmage - should I see if I can score a touchdown?

Parcells: Hell no - are you stupid boy? If you get past the line of scrimmage make sure you run directly into the waiting arms of the safety. If I find out you are avoiding tackles I'm going to bury your *** on the bench boy! DO YOU HEAR ME BOY?

Julius: Yes sir - anything you say coach.

Man, did you miss the boat on this one!

lmao@ interpreting "take on the safeties" as run straight into them. He wants his RBs to take the safeties on and shed them 1 on 1, rather than bounce farther outside, covering a greater distance and involving additional DBs in the play. It's elementary football. The shortest distance to the end zone is straight ahead. All the great RBs do the same - beat the safeties, you've got a TD. Just because Julius isn't doing it doesn't mean Parcells told him not to.

Hilarious.

so explain why he runs into his own blockers half the time after he hits a hole.

plus i haven't seen him get near a safety all year unless its at the line of scrimmage

I'm not concerned about Jones he and Barber make up a very good RB core and Jones has made some big plays for the Cowboys in the running game. Some of it is lost because he does not get many carries in the redzone but he has helped this team move the ball down the field. I will say he has started some games slowly but has been able to pick it up in the second half of games with 4.3 per carry in the second halfs of games

I disagree with this - JJ gets a lot of 8-11 yard runs in which the safeties come up and help on the tackle. Getting through the line of scrimmage hasn't been a problem for JJ this year, it's making a move at the next level and turning it into a really big gain that is the problem.

it wasn't a problem in his 1st year

I'm a huge Barber supporter but JJ has won me over. I like the kid and honestly I havent seen him Struggle. He'll be fine.

JJ seems hesitant about making moves once he clears the LOS; why is the question.

We talk about this every week.
JJ is a pretty good running back. Nothing more, nothing less.
I agree with those that say he looked more explosive his rookie year.
I did think there was a chance he could be an elite runner.
That is probably the reason people are disappointed with 1300 yards and 4 YPC.

Julius Jones is wearing down, and I also think teams have geared up to stop the run with Romo in the lineup to force the young QB to beat them. Oliver Hoyte has greatly helped the running game as well during this stretch, and MBIII has been a stud in the red zone and protecting leads (which we've had thanks to Romo).

Multiple factors that have both hampered and helped the running game.
