After forcing myself to watch the monday game again, I realized two things.

If I turn off the sound, I don't have to hear Cornhairless.

And Julius had a real bad blocking day. On the last sack of Romo, Rivera was getting beat, Julius stepped up to double team the guy and he just shoved Julius aside. Cmon Julius, pick it up. :(

JJ had a bad day blocking no doubt about it. But then he had a lot of company. On that play he was off balance and when you are as small as he is, it does not take that much to knock you down. JJ can do a good job on LBs and safety's and such, but he is just too small to be able to do too much to bid DL's coming through. MB the same way. Only someone as big as Polite or Hoyte has a real shot of even slowing down someone like Peppers.

I pointed out a few games ago that JJ seems to just take the wrong side when he is supposed to help with blocking. I just don't think he gets it, but again, I am not a football coach so I CAN'T BE SURE.

One of Emmitt's great qualities was his ability to crunch a blitzing LBer. Emmitt used perfect technique and his short frame to gain great leverage and just blow up LBers.

Emmitt was very good- but he got blown up by DE's and DT's when they came through. No RB is going to be able to do much to DL's when they break throuhg. Just too big and too much power coming for a 210/220 lb player to really be able to handle.

The idea is never that the RB actually "handles" the onrushing D-lineman, but he can, and should, and is expected to slow him significantly - enough that the QB has an extra second or two to throw.

Emmitt did this exceptionally well, Julius sucks at it.

JJ is waiting for a hole to open so he can hit it!

agreed.. Moose Johnston has said several times that Emmitt was better in pass protection than he was..

think about how many times Emmitt got hit over his career.. he had more reguar season carries than anyone ever, he had more playoff carries than anyone ever, he caught the ball a ton of times for a RB, and he was always active in the blocking game.. and he was a little guy! makes it even more amazing that he lasted as long as he did..

I don't care how good you are- a RB is NOT going to significantly slow up a DL. He is NOT going to buy even a full extra second. Maybe a half a second to almost a second. MAYBE. I love Emmit and he was great- but he never really slowed up a DL coming full blast because he COULDN'T. THAT is one of our problems- we are allowing WAY TOO MANY UNBLOCKED DL's into the backfield.

I disagree completely - Emmitt did slow D-linemen enough to buy the QB some real time.

Obviously Emmitt couldn't stand those guys up and stop them, but you seem to think Emmitt blocking an oncoming D-limeman was akin to a moped trying to slow down an oncoming train.

If you truly watched Emmitt block and have watched Julius Block you would see there is a dramatic difference.

Making defenders slow a little and then accelerate again makes a big difference - even quick 280 pound guys take a second to reach full accelerate after being slowed even a little.

And often just making enough contact to throw the defender off a direct line to the QB is enough to buy some significant time.

I agree completely that we are letting too many defenders get through the line of scrimmage untouched, but to say a good blocking RB doesn't make a difference is plain false.

I am with you 100%. I am sure it happenned once or twice a year but Emmitt could never be characterized as being blown up by blitzers or DL's and DE. It just did not happen.

He was always great in protection. Some people just make stuff up to fit their argument.

Is it just me or is it ludicrous to try to debate how much extra time (as measured in split seconds?) Emmitt gave QB's with his blocking? :lmao2:

I believe that was Colombo that was getting beat. Then Julius basically got bowled over. There was another play like that on a rollout where Strahan beat either Witten or Colombo, but Julius was supposed to help out and never really did. I've considered Julius to be a pretty good blocker so far in his career, but that was the worst display I've ever seen from him.

I agree. Witten has been horrible in his blocking. And that Fasano Kid, keep an eye on him when we run to his side, especially on sweeps. He is GOD AWFUL. Looks like a fish out of water.

If you remember Emmitt blocking linemen, you'd remember he went for their legs/thighs, often times getting back to his feet for a screen. That is the Emmitt I remember, he didn't need to go shoulder to shoulder with the defensive linemen because Aikman was quick with his release.

He often did take them in the chest - his legs were strong enough that he could drive into them and hit them with a pretty good shot and slow them down.
