According to Russini from The Athletic, more teams are using the XL packages that include a 6th offensive lineman. Teams mentioned are the Pats, Chargers, Lions, Broncos, Bills and Texans. The thought is they trust their sixth offensive lineman more than their 2nd or 3rd TE.

Why the Dolphins' Jumbo Formation Is Here to Stay

Miami has seen a lot of success using a sixth offensive lineman this season.

My reasoning here is that this is something we could see more in 2026 and if so, we may wanna keep Bass and/or Hoffman

BTW.......Bass's success could explain why Tyler Smith is playing the final two games this season at LT.

Miami seen a lot of success this year? Uhh... did social media author look at their record lately?

I love to watch the evolution of the game of football. For years its been a passing dominated league so defenses have gone with small players and more DBs on the field. Now the last two years the run game has made a massive come back and this year teams are embracing the power run game more than ever by getting more bulk up at the LOS to exploit these smaller defenders light boxes. This should be a hot trend for a while, more teams are likely to revert back to some old school 3-4 defensive looks to counter it, and then we will see another massive passing movement in a few years.

They are the top rushing team in the league
I can't speak for other teams on the list, but I was going to say that Miami probably over does it because they have no choice and their QB play has been a dud this year.

It did look intimidating though with Detroit having Dan Skipper as the second TE and leading the charge. LOL Made me want one of those too! 6'9" TE monster!

Speaking of Tua and teams that have no choice but to run, Tua is probably your next Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield next year. Another #1 that can be had for cheap and hopefully a redemption career. Kyler Murray on the Cards too.

I watch them. When they added Brunskill to the lineup+midway through the season as that 6th OL/TE it really helped out their run game.

Tua is cooked, which limited their passing game. But Brunskill has allowed them to survive with their run game to eek out wins.

Edit: When I say Tua is cooked, I really mean it. Dude has checked out this year. His reads were presnap and would just force passes to guys that were never open. His arm strength is gone due to injuries and well never having a strong one to begin with. He's been regulated to the short/mid passing game, so defenses can cheat those areas. I think the concussions have taken their toll as well. Seeing him as a year 2-3 guy to now it's a steep drop off. I think after next year he's cut and then he just retires. IMO the fire left after getting paid.

Remember their hc comes from the rams and mcvay, do a ton of eye candy and misdirection which makes it difficult to defend

Are we ahead of the curve then considering we used to do it with Connor McGovern and others? Football play by play guys loved it and pointed it out every time we lined up for it. Seems like the difference with these teams is they are doing it more as TE than FB?

THAT'S GOOD SO WE CAN STOP TRYING DRAFT TE'S to be great blockers!! Get a real one

I was really sad that we went away from that...what did they call it a few years ago, the Hulk package or something like that? Seemed to have a crazy high success rate.

I think it would be interesting to see the Cowboys use 6 OL with Lamb/Pickens on the outside. You simply dont have the numbers to fill the box and double both those receivers. I'd rather see that then 2 TE sets....although really good blocking TEs could start to see their value shoot up. Pittsburgh may be ahead of the curve with having a guy like Darnell Washington who blocks like a tackle, but is athletic enough to slip out a few times a game as a receiver. Hes like if Hunter luepke grew about 4 inches and added another 70 pounds.

I blame the defense. If not for them, we could have had more Jumbo crap on the offensive line. I hate the Flus; cut him loose.

bass and hoffman were good enough, which makes the Booker pick stupid. we could have taken a LB or DT...imagine that.

What is the point of having a blocking TE if they are not a passing threat???

The rule that brought the run game back is DB’s can no longer take out the legs of pulling linemen. Huge disadvantage to the D.
