Jumbo Offensive Line using a sixth offensive lineman

I love to watch the evolution of the game of football. For years its been a passing dominated league so defenses have gone with small players and more DBs on the field. Now the last two years the run game has made a massive come back and this year teams are embracing the power run game more than ever by getting more bulk up at the LOS to exploit these smaller defenders light boxes. This should be a hot trend for a while, more teams are likely to revert back to some old school 3-4 defensive looks to counter it, and then we will see another massive passing movement in a few years.

The rule that brought the run game back is DB’s can no longer take out the legs of pulling linemen. Huge disadvantage to the D.

Likely too many blown out knees.

Are we ahead of the curve then considering we used to do it with Connor McGovern and others? Football play by play guys loved it and pointed it out every time we lined up for it. Seems like the difference with these teams is they are doing it more as TE than FB?

Yes, Kellen Moore used to call it the Hulk package.

Man, what I wouldn't give to adopt an actual identity as a time of possession, smash mouth, play action offensive squad.

Oh well. I guess we're just stuck with the wannabe high volume pass attack that never seems to go anywhere against better/playoff teams.

as regards using a Tackle as a blocker like TEs are, I remember seeing that a long time ago. It is not a new idea

According to Russini from The Athletic, more teams are using the XL packages that include a 6th offensive lineman. Teams mentioned are the Pats, Chargers, Lions, Broncos, Bills and Texans. The thought is they trust their sixth offensive lineman more than their 2nd or 3rd TE.

My reasoning here is that this is something we could see more in 2026 and if so, we may wanna keep Bass and/or Hoffman

BTW.......Bass's success could explain why Tyler Smith is playing the final two games this season at LT.

Well as they say it is a copycat league However it's not new though wasn't it ,Kellen Moore he did this quite a bit used an offensive lineman as a fullback and as an extra blocker quite often...

But he also used EE as a center once so you know take it with a grain of salt....

Said I think our tight ends overall do a pretty good job in run blocking as does Williams are running back so I don't think they needed that I'd like to see Hunter more in as a fullback hybrid tight end and a blocker..

Yeah, I can't remember if I see that this year at all Maybe it's not in BS offense or something he'll install on the second installment which a lot of coaches do in their 2nd year to put more in the playbook....

both.. Why bring back an injured player in meaningless games anyway yes they're experimenting I don't know how they're gonna be able to afford to keep Hoffman and Bass because they've done enough to alert the league they might be able to be starters...

We've known it the last three years hoffman and Bass are really good players but I don't think the experiment with putting Smith out at left tackle is gonna work he doesn't wanna be there His reoccurring tendonitis in his knee makes him less mobile so I'm not sure where they're going with this I'm sure they might look at guy in at at right tackle but they're still gonna need to get a veteran to play left tackle doesn't have to be a super expensive one but they need to get a better left tackle..

Less Nate Thomas makes a leap It's something need to look into next year.. I don't believe they're going to keep steel but he is a really good run blocker but he's going to save them a lot of money....

A month ago I would have probably agreed without hesitation that Steele was a goner, but I'm really coming around to the idea that the Cowboys may bring him back. They could restructure his deal and free up $8m against the cap. Yeah he is a liability in pass pro, but is a plus in the run game. With as many resources as they likely need to put towards the defense and possibly bringing back Williams/Pickens a quick restructure of Steele might be the route to go.
