SMU has a chance to be a good job.

But it will take guy who can recruit. They've got to build that thing back up from ashes.

With DFW area kids there really is no reason to not dominate second tier football.

Will be interesting to see if they bring in Deion Sanders in any capacity.
His kid plays there and he has recruited from all over to play for his Prep program.
Parents trust the dude and he'd probably be one heck of a recruiter.
He'd need the right X and Os guys around him but he could build a winner there IMHO.

Word is guy was super lazy. Private donors were supplementing his 2.5 million salary, and he wasn't recruiting personally, he was having morning practices so he could golf in the afternoons, in the off season he was in Hawaii instead of with staff and courting players.

I think he self destructed on purpose, and it is very unbecoming and unethical, he basically stole money and dumped on the student athletes in the program.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him crawl back to Hawaii where a desperate program rehires him after they fire Norm Chow.

Well there was the rumor going around that he was basically fired...had not considered him purposely doing things to get fired.

Interesting.

Welp....... Time to dust off Jerrry Glanville.

I am thinking about starting a rumor that SMU might hire Sumlin or Briles just to get the baylor and aggie fans all riled up.

Nah...don't need the drama but the evil side of me still likes the idea. :D

In the old days, you would have posted this after you had already started the rumor. Have to admit, I sometimes miss the old BP.

SMU would be smart to grab Dino Babers at Bowling Green, he is familiar with Texas recruiting and was on Art Briles staff for many years.

His relationship with Briles is still close, when Baylor kicked former five star wideout Robbie Rhodes off the team this year for failing drug tests repeatedly, Briles hooked him up for a transfer over to Babers, who runs a version of Briles' spread.

Babers could get recruitment up in the DFW area, and dare i say it, may even in time make SMU interesting to the Big 12 for inclusion, Clemson's Chad Morris could do similar as he also has Texas recruitment ties and credibility as an offensive tactician.

In the old days that rumor might have credibility, but these days not a chance.

I don't know about Sumlin, but Briles several years ago confided there were but two jobs he'd leave Baylor for, the Dallas Cowboys or the Longhorns.

I think he changed his mind about the Longhorns after Baylor built him a stadium, and he listened but didn't pitch himself to UT in January.

LOL. Sure it wouldn't.

SMU may very well target Ags and Bears coaches.
Both have OC that could appeal.

Chad Morris would be a short list dream candidate if they can get him.

But I'd be looking at guys with extreme recruiting advantages like Deion Sanders or the Cedar Hill head football coach.
Imagine stealing DeMarkus Lodge?

Deion isn't a coach. Any recruiting advantage would soon disappear when it becomes evident he doesn't know what he is doing.

There are more than a few coaches who really do not run the offense or defense.
Deion could coach Special Teams, recruit and he could make the program money and draw it attention.
If they brought in the right coordinators it could work very well.
He has a lot of ex-NFL buddies around him.

Deion had parents sending 5 star recruits from other states to play for him in HIGH school.

It is an outside the box option but SMU needs to do something very drastic if they want to ascend from the ashes.

Plenty desperate, the university made this lone individual publicly retract his doubts about the future of athletics.

Jones is the best coach in their program's history, and loves being in Hawaii, so if he isn't retiring that's the best bet of his future, though they won't be able to afford the 2.5 million he swindled from SMU boosters.

Hiring Sanders would be a gimmick. It might get a few recruits his first year or two, but long term it would do nothing to build a program. I doubt Deion would want to do the work required of a head coach of a program.

Gimmick? Yes. Program building? Can't agree.
The guy started his own charter school then recruited from all over the country.

Deion knows how to go get talent and he knows talent wins.
He especially knows local talent and whose ear to whisper in.
His SMU connections have gotten guys like Mudiay committed to SMU.
He'd have clothing deals and bring more hood to SMU.
Not sure SMU wants that but the reality is they need to do something or just drop football altogether.

I went to the Tech/SMU game on CAMPUS and it was a 50-50 split at BEST for SMU.
They are drawing 3k fans....

They can;t hire Sumlin or Kliff or anyone hip and current with real collegiate experience so they gotta think outside the box IMHO.
