I just don't see the point of bringing politics into it. Has nothing to do with feelings either way.

I believe Staubach played on some kind of football team in the military, probably flag stuff or something like that.

Squadron against squadron maybe.

Played for a team called the Pensacola Goshawks when he was based in Florida. While he was in Vietnam, Gil Brandt sent him a box of footballs to use while out there. Apparently, when he got back stateside, the balls were completely scuffed up from all of the use.

Staubach used a couple of his two week leaves from military service to attend offseason training with the Cowboys. Don Meredith joked that this was the moment that he knew that he would have to retire - when a guy has vacation leave, and he spends it training for football, then he (Meredith) knew that he didn't have the dedication necessary to play.
