Just an idea (to acquire Calvin Johnson)

Just an idea. The Raiders want to get out from under the first pick in the draft because they can’t afford the 30 million guaranteed money that the first pick will command. They need more picks or players to fill up holes that are glaring and would probably take much less than the chart requires to trade up that far. Jerry Jones knows Al Davis well (and visa versa) and likes to do business with him. Jones’ team is much less needy than the Raiders and can probably afford a number one-over-all’s demands as well as any. His team also has some young well-regarded players that he could do without because he has adequate replacements in the wings.

Suppose Jones offered Davis a swap of first round picks, Spears, the Dallas fifth round pick and the initial seventh round pick in order to select Calvin Johnson. Would Davis consider it? Would Jones?

Interesting idea, but this is Al Davis, right? What precludes him from doling out $30 mil in guaranteed money?

That isnt enough ammo to make that trade, and if Spears was worth that much, we wouldnt be trying to trade him.

lol this is probably the most lopsided proposed deal I have EVER seen. Spears and a 7th rd pick wouldnt even move us into the top 10 and you want to get the #1 overall pick in the entire draft....hahahahah what a terrible idea...

we'd need to give up our entire draft and a high end player -- Ware is pretty much the only guy who would get us there.

If Walking Dead Man were to take that deal it would almost rival our epic rape and pillage of the Vikings!

Yep, if Davis accepted that offer he is certifiable. Just ask yourself, if the Cowboys had the #1 overall pick in the draft would you accept an offer like that? Most of us would fall off our bar stools laughing so hard.

no davis wouldn't consider it. where do these "madden" ideas come from?

the point value from 1 to 22 is a LOT HIGHER than just swapping - we'd have to give up 1, 2, 3 and possibly a 1 or 2 next year. and why the hell are players who are underachievers here suddenly have value in a trade? do you not think davis or the oakland staff can see for themselves???

I made the suggestion only after reading these articles from Raider environs:

http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_5726852
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2007/04/22/SPG6MPCV5Q1.DTL

In the salary cap atmosphere of today, teams at the top who want to trade out of the spot will take a lot less, I believe, than the draft chart calls for. Without taking into account the effect of the cap, Jimmy Johnson's chart is unrealistic in figuring the difference in worth of draft positions.

But what if Jones threw in another player? To get it done, who could that be?

This first pick is worth two number sevens. At least.

Is one player worth trading up at such cost? Not in hindsight but without knowing if that player would be a HOF WR or franchise QB? Knowing that player will get a buttload of guaranteed money. And may injure his leg the first game of the season ala Joey Galloway. Or fall on his face like Ryan Leaf.

I would love to get Calvin Johnson more than anyone and honestly wouldn't care if we traded the majority of our draft to get him but any realistic chance to get him would probably have to include Ware and that is one thing I would never do.

As of right now our team is fairly strong and while we could address depth in this years draft, you can do that any year, but you can't get Calvin Johnson every year.

I know were not going to get Johnson so I'm not worried about it, but if we were to somehow get him I would be one of the happiest Cowboy fans on Earth.

Exactly............the whole idea of it all ended as soon as Spears was mentioned.

I've said it a thousand times, he is, and will continue to be, a waste of time.

Howdy, Sarge. I hope you're wrong. I have high hopes for Spears and Canty this year. I'm slowly being ensnared by Phillips'o'mania and Pass Rush Delirium Fever.

Afternoon. I think Canty may be OK but I just don't see it in Spears. As many will recall, I didn't like him the day we drafted him.

I too hope I'm wrong. Thus far, though, he's lived up to my 'expectations.'

Peace.

People seem to think Al Davis is stupid. Davis is a creepy old man who seems to be on his last leg. Al may make odd decisions. He may show far too much love for former Raiders. He may be loyal to a fault. He may even be a vampire. Be he isn't stupid.

By the way, I'm not advocating trying to get Johnson, and I also have high hopes for Spears, but many here were down on him after his recent comments. I suspect, as a fairly recent first round pick, he has a lot more credibility around the NFL than he has on this board.

But he was once arrogant and spiteful enough to bench Marcus Allen(in his prime) for most of a season so his personality has led him to indirectly do stupid things.
Don't really see how that has any bearing on this discussion but I always found it interesting(and a great window into his personality) that he did what he did to Allen.
And, for the record, if he was a vampire I think he'd be a lot less fragile looking and not using the walker. At least thats my guess based on my limited knowledge of vampires and their ilk.

actually, I think it is Parcells who has far more credibility around the NFL than he has on this board

OK -- But I still think he drinks human blood.
