We just signed a guard this morning..a vet starter formerly of the Texans.A 41 game starter in fact. I'm not gonna try to spell his name lol. Let me ask you all, do you think this is an indictment of Connor Williams? He didn't look good last week. Looks like this guy will be the swing guard Sunday as they just released Kadeem Edwards. Should we be concerned if we are already playing musical chairs on the oline?

Absolutely. Connor has been disappointing the whole training camp. He is not fit to play G right now. His technique is bad and he's too small to guard NFL DTs.

Indictment of Williams? Of course not

I'm all for hiring a HC and OC without indicting Garrett and Linehan

I felt bad for Williams last week. He battled..but got manhandled time after time. Not everyone we draft will be Zack Martin day 1..shows us how blessed we are to have Zack. Williams will be solid come year 3..but for now he needs to get stronger and work on his technique. That takes seasoning. I like the new guard we signed today. He has a ton of quality starts under his belt and is young..and very strong. Good signing by the FO. Didn't know much about him,but after doing some research..the dude is solid.

no.
Its about depth.
If Im wrong....then wonder if the switch happens at the bye week...giving the new guy some time to learn the offense.
but no...I think they stay with Williams.
I thought he had a good game...over-all.
this isnt on the oline in my opinion.
Dak MUST be better.

It's hard to know if the signing had anything to do with Williams struggles against the Panthers. Part of me says no since they were already talking to this guy last week, but of course they didn't sign him until this week, so who knows. But even if the signing did have something to do with the game, I think "indictment" is a strong term. They could still like Williams very much, but think he may need a little more time to bulk up and learn.

No doubt Dak has to be much better. Its confidence, play calling, and oline issues. ALL FIXABLE.

I think Williams played well against a talented veteran player, overall. His sacks given up notwithstanding. Su'a-Filo is a veteran backup they wanted to add after week 1 so that his salary is not guaranteed. He replaces the KC guy we IRd the day he got here.

I do not think it is just strength with Williams. He does not seem to have the frame to add the bilk to be able to anchor. He is too tall and lean. Looks like a Tackle to me.

Should have switched him and Lael in training camp.

The book on him was needed to bulk up to play G but they're putting him out there anyway because they blew it on Green and it's out of necessity. He does have promise after an off season of serious G conditioning and strengthening.

Xavier Su'a-Filo is our new OG arrival's full name. He was a four-year starter for Houston with 41 games to his credit. It's anyone's guess if and when he might be inserted into the lineup, since I haven seen anything indicating if he might become actively involved. He's a big (6-4, 310) stout fellow, so maybe it wouldn't take too long if Williams' problems continue. It's was obviously unfortunate that our FA acquisitions of the recent past haven't panned out thus far. Let's keep an eye out for new developments. For the present, at least, it appears he's a backup, pending further developments.

He gave up 3 sacks.
What needed to happen for him to have a bad day if 3 sacks is a good game. Jesus Christ.

So how dominated did Williams need to get to have a bad game in your mind?
If 3 sacks are a good game then whats a bad game? 8 sacks? Maybe 9?
I guess Chas Green had a good game against Atlanta last year also.

He had a bad game because he failed on some specific plays that he has to learn to counter. That doesn't mean he didn't play well on a lot of his snaps. The clock is on that outside swim move that got him twice. You get this when you have a rookie starting against a talented vet.

Dak didn't help him on the one sack, for the record.

You guys have to realize that there's a middle ground between taking your lumps and losing your job after your first start.

Everyone keeps saying our expectations of Connor are too high. Absolutely not true. The expectation is simply for them not to start a guard who is clearly not ready. Not sure why that is difficult to grasp.

Of all the changes made during the off season, I felt releasing o-line coach Frank Pollack was a huge mistake. All he did was coach up 3 pro bowlers, Ron leary, la el Collins at guard and tackle and got the best out of Cooper. Made no sense at all to let him go. Williams has lost the opportunity to be coached by one of the best.
