Just For Fun: You Win Lottery and Buy The Cowboys

Just for fun, what would you do if you won crazy money in the lottery and you could buy the Dallas Cowboys? What would your opening press conference look like? What actions would you take? To that end, I have always wondered how fun it would be to take over the franchise. Here's what I would do.

My First Conference
"Good afternoon media, fans, family members. The Cowboys have been in Dallas since 1960 and I was born three years later in the Dallas area. My older brother and our dad ensured I was a Cowboys fan since birth and I have enjoyed so many eras of greatness, exciting deep playoff runs, and of course our five championships. In fact, The Dallas Cowboys hold the NFL record for most consecutive winning seasons with 20 from 1966 to 1985. During that time, we reached the playoffs 18 times, won 13 NFC East championships, and reached the Super Bowl five times.

Then the Landry era ended as Jerry Jones bought the team, fired Landry, and hired the great Jimmy Johnson who was the sole architect of a team that won 3 championships in four years.

As a longtime resident of the Dallas area, I am intimately familiar with the hundreds of millions of dollars the local community has invested in the team over the decades as well as our loyal fans worldwide and I want to thank fans everywhere for their support. I do not take this support lightly and as the new owner, I feel a strong obligation to put the best possible team on the field as well as hire the best of the best coaches, scouts, analytics experts, and so on. This franchise has been the benefactor of a tremendously loyal fan base and it is the job of ownership to put winning above all else, no exceptions.

I want to thank Jerry and the Jones family for growing the franchise to the most valuable sports franchise in the world. Jerry's skills as a businessman have created great wealth for the Jones family and his savvy business ideas have greatly enriched the other 31 NFL owners bank accounts with exponential growth.

Taking over as the owner of this great franchise is something I do not take lightly. I remember my pain in watching "The Catch", the losses to Pittsburg in the Super Bowls, the Dez Catch blown call, and many others. Now as the owner, I understand the great challenge that lies ahead in turning around a franchise that has failed to reach the NFC Championship game for almost three decades. But I commit to three pillars of my ownership:

1) Winning will always be my top priority
2) I will hire the best experts in the world and let them do their job without interference
3) We will have accountability from top to bottom which is the foundation of my commitment to winning

It is a privilege to take over as the new owner of the Dallas Cowboys and I look forward to what the future holds for our team. Thank you again to all the fans for your support and let's get to work!"

What about you? What would your press conference look like?
Hard to beat your press conference Art! I might start by thanking all Cowboys fans for their incredible patience and support over the years.

I'm going the 'honesty' route.....

"Lets be fair fans, we arent good enough, but ive got faith in Jurry, sorry Jerry, to get us out of this. In these difficult times I believe that he should have the opportunity to put things right. I understand he believes that the new coach can get the best out of this roster and that the best way to evaluate the (poor) HC, is to keep the roster as it is. As a result WE'LL look for ,and pay , for the best HC possible, and whilst I dont agree with the holding back of CAP, i'll concede to Jorry , sorry Jerry's, plan to continue to 'save' the CAP for the carryover with a view to re-evaluating the situation for 2026. ....well Jerry I dont agree, but you're the boss, you are the GM. He says to be patient with the HC and the team and I agree that 2025 will be a less pressured fact finding season and he wont be judged that severely (Under breath.....unlike the GM).
Now because 2025 is going to be a (Jorry led car crash as GM) difficult year, ive factored in a discount year to the loyal fans on all tickets and concessions.
Thank you for your patience under this Jerry led forthcoming season and I wish him all be best in 2026 in his retirement (d@mn wrong speach....edit that for 2026 and Jerry's retirement/sacking). Now dont forget I wont have any dealings with the running of the team and I dont want to step on Jerry's media toes, but please feel free to use any media outlet to show your support and encouragement for Mr Jones.....see you all in 2026.

Not that hard huh? Maybe you don’t pay attention to the rest of the NFL that spent decades and they can’t even win their division 1989 the last time the Cleveland Browns won their division are you serious? I mean go look at all those teams that have been having all these first round picks changing GM’s changing owners and they’re not winning Super Bowls. They are not surpassing anyone you are really need to get a clue don’t many teams ahead of the Dallas Cowboys their top six and win percentage. I’ve been in the playoffs for the last eight seasons. Now go tell me all the new teams getting the championship games because that’s not really happening. Haven’t even won a Super Bowl so this outlandish hypothetical that you would find your way to a $10 billion lottery which doesn’t really. Exist. I don’t remember the lottery for that much but I do know this how often does an NFL team come open for sale even in a hypothetical then you have to bid on it and then you have to win it let alone a Dallas Cowboys but you really think there’s a blueprint for anybody could just run into the NFL enter password the Dallas Cowboys you’re done since 1989 which is three Super Bowl wins there’s only two other teams have done that but oh you mean since the last three Super Bowls but still I think you’re clueless and delusional. All if you think it’s that easy, just a role in by a team and instantly get to the championship game you better look around. I think it was just for a bit of fun.. so stop getting your knickers in a twist.

I see you go on and on and about Jerry and his 3 SB's.

He was just extremely lucky he bought the team before the cap era.. imagine if he had bought them later.. he would have ZERO SB's.

Thats not my opinion based on nothing,, 3 decades is a fair sample size to base said opinion on.

How about 28 in a row?. In other words, the winning owners of the last 28 SBs all hired a different GM than themselves. Isn’t that every year?
Well, since 2000 only 13 franchises have won super bowls. Are those the only teams that employ "experts" to guide their teams? I'm hearing that's all it takes to win. Bottom line is it's more luck than anything. You have to draft guys that develop and we all know the draft is a crap shoot. You need coaches and players to mesh. You need a system that players buy into and play well in. And even then, the ball with bounce however it will bounce. Players will get hurt at random times. There are 31 other teams out there looking to beat you. Even if everything is perfect, you still won't always win the Super Bowl. NE only won the Super Bowl six times during their 20 year reign of terror.

I win the lottery, hire a great staff, then begin learning the business of running an NFL team, ultimately doing just that. There’s NO WAY I would be a hands-off owner. I’d expect to learn from the best in order to be one of the best, however long that took.

Jones had a massive head start. He already knew more about both management and football than any poster here. He’s put together some great teams since the last SB, but he can’t get out there and play.

I simply say we won't make the same mistakes the previous regime made. That I understand my limitations as a football "expert" and will hire the best GM I can find and allow him to build out a skilled and innovative front office.

Agreed. A third grader can recognize the problem with Jerry being our head coach and GM with zero football decision making skills.

I will play this game but I get to play before they signed Dak! Then I design my offense to play around Trey Lance and see if I can grow him after Dak went out this year. If not I would have been in a much better draft position than I am now to move up and take a QB. Or maybe one is available where I drafted!

I will respond to two of your points.
  1. “…since 2000 only 13 franchises have won super bowls.” OK, that is certainly true. But all 13 of those franchises had owners who believed the path to winning a Super Bowl starts with hiring a GM who is not the owner. So saying that “only 13 franchises have won the SB” in the last quarter century is only half of the equation. The other half is all have a GM who isn’t the owner.
  2. “Even if everything is perfect, you still don’t always win the Super Bowl”. I agree. But we are only one of 2 franchises in the entire NFC that haven’t even won a divisional playoff game this century and played in an NFC championship game. Only Dallas and Washington have that distinction. So we haven’t even been close. 100% of the franchises who have made it to a conference championship or even SB have a GM who isn’t the owner.
You said “it’s more luck than anything.” That’s exactly what the Jones boys say. But when your team is 4-13 in the playoffs since its last SB, it ain’t just bad luck.

Excellent points for sure. I think things have been run so slipshod in Dallas for almost three decades that it seems "normal" to a lot of fans, as if all NFL teams operate this way with the owner as the head coach and GM. It is anything but normal and the Jones model has been so unsuccessful (assuming making deep playoff runs is important to fans) that no other NFL team has adopted that model (Bengals sorta had that for a while but then again they have played in a conference championship game in the past 28 seasons).

Exactly and I'll add he hired and gave 100% authority over all football matters to Jimmy who was the sole architect of the roster that won three SB.

Anyone defending Jerry for the past 28 seasons is either disillusioned or on Jerry's payroll.

I would hire about 5-6 former Cowboys players, coaches and community leaders to form a committee with the task of finding the best possible candidate for the position of GM.

The End
I love that idea!

1. I hire the Packer’s GM immediately who drafted the youngest team in the league and has not missed on a QB.

Everybody has a number.

2. I hire Spagnola as defensive coordinator.

Everybody has a number.

3. I hire Sean Lee as linebackers coach.

4. I keep McCarthy. I don’t think he’s the problem.

5. I draft a QB every single year regardless of round until we hit on one.

6. I change back to the silver pants.

7. I change from Pepsi to Coke inside the stadium.

8. I keep a section in the stadium reserved and provide free tickets for long time loyal fans who cannot afford to go through a lottery.

9. I retain Charlotte Jones on the executive staff.

10. I replace the turf with grass like the Cardinals do.

11. I roll back concession prices like the Falcons did to accommodate fans.

12. Press conferences are for coaches and players only - period.

Notice - not one of these things affects the salary cap.

I can afford the fan gestures because I make my money off television not hot dogs.

Honor the past but don’t live in it. Look to the future
