After the season Demarco Murray will be a free agent. After the last two weeks he looks great but based on his injury past and history of RBS after 27, the best thing that Dallas could do is place the Franchise tag on Murray.
The franchise tag is an average of the top 5 highest paid players salary at that position. If AP gets released and Lynch, both are very likely after the season then it drops that average RB salary way down. The RBS salaries have been going down over the last few years.
Sure it will be around a 7-8 million cap hit to franchise him for 2015 but at his age and injury history that's a better bet to place than to sign him long term to 10-15 guaranteed and then have to eat alot more in the near future.

They were talking about that on countdown to kickofff sunday. Cant imagine jerry doing that, for cap reasons.

We franchised spencer for 2 years in a role. It would hurt for a year but be better long term to franchise him than have him crap out at 29 and then be a even bigger cap hit. The franchise tag for RBs keep going down. I would franchise him first and then try to get a good team friendly deal done or he can play on the tag.

I agree, don't make another long term mistake with injury prone players. Franchise him, if he has another good season, injury free....then maybe sign him to a 3-year deal. It will cost more for one year instead of 3-4 if something bad happens.

But, they may have to franchise Dez so that may put a damper on things.

Nah, franchise Ro McClain - if he finishes the final 14 games strong. That way we get to lease his services another year with an option to buy long-term. As much as I am a fan of his, Dallas has to be careful not to give him a big contract too soon unless they know he is all in long term. An extra year to evaluate him helps in that effort.

Murray should get $2M-$3M/per based on the way the league is devaluing RBs. If our OL continues to gel - I expect Dallas to go for a cheaper alternative if Murray's price is too high - and still get similar production.

That would be a waste of a franchise tag IMO. He won't cost a lot to re-sign(higher sign-on bonus and less guaranteed money) and the Cowboys might need another season to evaluate Dez and/or Murray to see if they want to risk signing them long-term.

What if Peterson gets his issues behind him and wants to sign with the Cowboys for a bargain 1 year contract?

Totally against this unless a deal can't be reached. Even if he leads the league in rushing yards and is the MVP. Tagging Spencer is completely different as DL have a long shelf life than RB's.

I would not franchise Ro. He has the mentality that has led him to quit in the past, just give him a deal and be done with it.

You could get 3 years out of Murray for a signing bonus equal to the Franchise Tag. A straight 8-10m cap hit for a RB is a terrible use of resources. You don't have to guarantee a ton of money either, the RB market is soft.

If the vikings cut AP and he signs here next year and gets to run behind this oline... woo! don't care if he's suspended for half the year. took him about that long to get going when he was coming back from his injury and still ran for 2K

things would have to fall apart completely for Peterson to do 1 year deal. I actually think Peterson does end up in Dallas next year as apart of two headed attack along with rookie RB. I can envision a favorable contract for Dallas as Peterson plays for his home state and is coming off legal issues. This is what it comes down to:

1. Murray will probably be asking for 4 years for $30 million (about 7.5 million a year)
2. Peterson is more complicated but I think considering his age, legal issues but also still be very productive RB will be asking for 3 years at $18 million (6 million a year).

Hypothetical: right now he's playing on the same level as Pat Willis (in my eyes). Let's say he finishes the final 14 games just as strong as he's started and turns our D around. That means he has returned to the form that made him the 8th overall pick.

You still wouldn't (strategically) franchise him? I would. He's going to be a wanted man. 6'4" 260lb stud MLB who just turned 25 two months ago? Re-sign him, Jerry.

I believe the franchise tag value has an "or whichever is greater" stipulation. I don't think it's simply an average of the previous season's Top 5, but I could be wrong.

I think they look at a rolling 5 year period to come up with one potential value.

In short, I believe the tag number would be higher. Likely no lower than it is right now.

Franchising a running back makes no sense unless it was a generational back nowadays.

Too pricey for a team that still has a bunch of holes to fill. I honestly think Murray will be allowed to test the market before he comes back to Dallas realizing that the list of teams looking to pay an injury prone RB getting near 30 a lot of money is really short

Nobody has to be willing to pay him a kings ransom, just more than Dallas can afford to. I think he'd get a better offer elsewhere.

It really wouldn't shock me if Seattle made a run at him. They could get a back who gives them the physical game that team thrives on, and who's a little younger than Marshawn.
