Man, that is a tough way to start the week. Get better man and get that Cholesterol down. You are way to valuable to this board. I just might have to have Hos come to your house and make sure you work at it. You don't want that. (You did see his pic in the Forum members pics right???) :D

Anyway, Get better. My prayers go out to you.

First, was that a fasting cholesterol ? the test is not real accurate if you ate before having blood work drawn. i beleive its supposed to be 12 hour fast prioir to blood draw.

Also, Here some free nutrition advice for you and anyone else who reads this thread (im a licensed dietitian)

LDL is the "bad" cholesterol. HDL is the "good" cholesterol. one of the things doctors look atis the ratio of HDL to LDL, but your numbers dont look good - your LDL is way too high.

Nutrition science is relatively new field but its widely accepted now that hydrogenated oils which produce trans-fatty acids may be the biggest diet no-no. the reason is because these fats lower good cholesterol and raise your bad choleterol so that it is a double whammy.

Trans fats are found in deepfried foods, margarine, and most snack foods like chips, tastycakes etc. these are the foods to stay away from. a lot of people try to improve cholesterol by cutting out eggs and meat and butter, but the cholesterol in food is not what gives you a high cholesterol level, your body makes its own cholesterol every day. its the fats in our diet that cause cholesterol to be distributed throughout the body. and so now we tell people that butter is better than margarine because butter has saturated fats and you do want to limit them to a point, but margarine has transfatty acids and they are worse. start reading the nutrition labes on foods (especially snack foods) to find out if the product has hydrogenated oils in it. also limit deep fried foods (french fries, onion rings, wings etc). red meat is not as bad as you would think, just keep it to moderation. olive oil is one of the best for cooking, canol oil is fine too.

Also exercise will help boost your good cholesterol. These are things you can control, some people will still need medication though to acheive good numbers. also doctors are starting to question how big a factor cholesterol is at predicting heart disease so dont get too upset, just do what you need to do to get your numbers closer to traget.

14hrs of fasting only drank water.

HDL was 41 which just makes the grade it should be over 40 anything under is not good

Triglycerides was 115 which was in the good range.

They said my Glucose was high it was 110 but that was down from my last one which was 115 BUt from everything I can find my level is ok it should be between 90-130 which it is I don't know why they said it was high.

BTW the first test I had done I wasn't fasting I had eaten that morning about two hours b4 the test and it was still lower than this test....

I also found out that taking Fiber can lower the Colesterol by 30%.

I downloaded a Diet from http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtot24.htm

Thanks Eveeryone and I am starting a exercise routine today which will be hard with my back but I'd rather be in pain than dead....

that diet is old, i checked it out. the step 1 and step 2 were looked at as outdated a few years ago. still good info, but the article focued mainly on sat fats and the thinking now is too manily avoid the transfatty acids. also that step 1 diet is restrictive in areas that will have no bearing on cholsterol. you dont want the diet too restrictive, it makes it less likely you will stick with it. i'll look for something else on line and post it if i find a good one.
also most healthcare practitioners are now looking at 70-110 being normal for blood glucose, 120 is considered marginal. i dont know where you got the 90-130 figures from. keep an eye on that

jksmith, go to eatright.org for updated nutrition information on many things. its the american dietetic associations web site, (the home page has a lot of stuff just related to the profession) but go to top left corner and click on Food and Nutrition Information, then look at column on left and click on Nutrition Fact Sheets.

also i know a lot of people who are on atkins and modified atkins diets and they eat meat every day and there cholesterol has decreased, this is causing a lot of people to conduct more studies regarding beef, sat fats and cholesterol. thats just an FYI, im not recommending that diet to you, its just something interesting that ive noticed.

But check out the site and spend a little time there, also there's a fact sheet on preventing type 2 diabetes, i would recommend you check that out since you glucose levels have been close to borderline, 110 and 115 definitely upper level of normal.

Four words -

partially hydrogenated soybean oil

That crap is in SOOOO much, always look at ingredients. You'll be shocked at how many processed foods contain that stuff. Anything that has that, don't eat.

I am not an organic, Whole Foods ONLY kinda guy, but I am slowly going there. I have no problem with conventional type foods, eat them all the time, though I do prefer higher quality organic stuff some of the time (it tastes better most of the time, and is better for you). But I do have a problem with processed food. A big problem.

Processed food became a staple during WWII and grew throughout the Cold War, and our society is now utterly saturated with it. Little Debbie, deli meats and cheeses, canned foods, boxed foods, chips, microwave dinners, etc., etc., etc. I grew up on a diet of about half REAL food and half processed, so I still struggle with eating it.

But a real simple solution for anyone stuggling with cholestorol, weight (I have not eated processed food in 3 weeks, I have lost nearly 20 pounds), and just overall health, I would suggest stearing clear of ANY processed food. It just isn't good for you. We aren't in the 50s any longer...

yeah I tend to stay away from the processed crap too. its funny to read the ingredients, sometimes it seems like all your eating is chemicals. but i do eat a lot of steak, hamburger, roast beef. i like red meat a lot more than chicken, fish.

some people get a little carried away with the whole organic only foods. mostly they are healthier choices but very expensive. and now ive been reading by a few doctors who are really into nutrition research that its not only organic but you have to look at grass fed vs grain fed. one doctor states that grass fed only cattle produce meat that is low in sat fat and high in omega 3 fatty acids, but if you feed the cattle grains (even organic) the the cattle will have mostly sat fat in their meat. so then he's got a place where you can order steaks and hamburgers form cattle that have only been grass fed and its like hundereds of dollars for 40 lbs of steak, burgers. its kind of a "purist" mentality but gets way out of hand.

though i do like the organic milk, its just got a great taste, kind of like cream. cost is about 2 times that of the regular milk though.

Doing more cardio has helped me out a lot with both cholesterol and high blood pressure. So if you're not doing 30 minutes of cadio three times a week try to squeeze it in.

I just had mine checked last week along with testing for a few other things. I guess I'll call and check into what they found later this week. I guess if they havent called it must not be too bad.

I'm seriously looking into the mediteranian diet along with doing some cardio as well. I feel better since I quit the cancer sticks so I might as well take full advantage of it.

Best of luck to ya JK. I'll let ya know what I find on mine and forward any advice they give me as well

That's what I need to do.

I have high blood pressure and have been on medication for the past couple of years. It's just not healthy for me to carry any weight. I'm currently 195 pounds on a 6-0 frame and I need to be at 180. When I get down to 180, all my numbers are so much better.

I weighed 206 when I first found out how out of whack my cholesterol and high blood pressure numbers were. I got down to 180 in two months ... I ran the stairs at the basketball arena here on my lunch hour and cut back on soda pops, desserts and potatoes (mainly french fries).

Since all this, I've started reading ingredients and I agree with Crown Royal that it's almost horrifying.

I've also developed an alergy to MSG, so I watch out for that crapola, too.

Since I started doing more cardio I haven't needed my blood pressure meds, as a matter of fact I've been off them for the last two months.

Good thread, dont worry JK you can make it right. I have been on BP medicine for 1 1/2 and my cholesterol is right where yours are. I was having nerve problems all last week, tingling in the left arm,leg etc. I thought I was checking out,so my friend who works in nutrician/chiropractic/acupuncture,he is very smart in these areas. He tells me your body is telling you ,that you need to eat better. He put a plan together for me,to get off the meds,he told me,red yeast rice will naturally lower your cholesteral, and EDTA will remove plaque from your arteries. Good luck, eat better, exercise and you should get those levels down :D sorry for rambling :p:

Partially Hydrogenated oils is some of the worst stuff you can put in your body ... unfortunately it's in almost everything in most peoples cabinets and in so many products you buy at the grocery store.
