He should have waited for the OTA dates to be announced before planning his vacation. After all, he is an employee. He works around the team's schedule, not the other way around. That said, I don't see how his presence would (positively) affect how he plays in October. He is what he is, and running around in shorts won't change that.
but as far as i know it's not *just* roy. if this were roy and he was just going to cancun by himself or w/wife/whatever that's one thing. but if it's a planned family event where the entire family, or as much of it as can, will show up - those are damn hard to plan.
even for just little old me and my serious lack of millions it's not that easy. sure i can control my schedule, but my brother who works as a manager in a chain store had to get time off 3 months ago because of company policy.
my sister who tutors handicapped kids has to make plans to have a backup and the backup has to make their plans around backing up my sister and that's not easy to change.
my other brother is just flat hard to get ahold of at times and makes it on such very few and rare events. then i have another brother who only lives 70 miles away so it's pretty easy for him to change up his schedule.
this is all for my father who wants very much to get his kids together all at once and so very few opportunities present itself. but since we lost our mother/his wife each and every once of these opportunities is pretty special to him and face it, as 72 he doesn't have much left.
we don't either.
now i have no idea in the world if roy's situation is simular or not. far as i know none of us know. yet *we* want him to bail out and prove dedication time and time again simply because of the fact we found out he DIDN'T use every available opportunity.
he's in much better shape, so he's working out. he's changed #'s to try and focus. we know he goes in early and leaves late. yet, all that he *has* done is blown by and ignored because it wasn't enough FOR US when we have simply no stake in his life or game so our anger is cool. doesn't cost anything.
you're right dooms. we disagree. i don't think roy going along with pre-set plans to spend time with his family is such a bad thing and i also don't think it shows a lack of dedication he's trying to do this year. maybe he's been busting his hiney for a month and this time off was planned as a breather.
we make a lot of assumptions with so little info. if you want to question his dedication that's fine. i just can't see where an average fan has more insight to the dedication of roy than the coaches and owner who's actually paying this player where we can get angry because he's not doing enough.
fyi - bbgun, i replied to you but not really directing my post at you. just the overall thread. i agree where you're coming from in this.
