Adam, what a guy like Beriault can do for us is spell Roy. The net effect would be that our deep defense would be better because our best safety won't be going into the last five minutes winded.
Also, if Berialut develops and becomes a reserve deep safety next season, it would allow Roy to cover underneath more in the nickel/dime and be closer to the line in order to blitz.

Good for us, bad for them.

He is a SS, and KD is still better than him at that position. Dunno what he is going to do on the team. HE won't beat out RW for SS that is for sure

He'll be a good backup, good special teams player...sorta like Keith Davis will be.

Beriault seems to be better playing the ball in the air than Roy Williams

a play-making sub and solid special teams player is what BIll may have in mind for him

I remember that he was tearing it up in camp and we were all excited about him being the answer for us at FS. I know he got hurt and was on IR, but he should be back this coming year. Is anyone else thinking he might be one piece of the puzzle for us in the secondary?

He will work in probably at SS but we need a real FS!!

Provided he can recover from his surgery, Beriault will back up Roy and be a special teams demon. So his impact on our secondary probably won't be much.

I agree. Berry-O will be a special teamer and a back up SS. They were refering to him as Baby Bates in camp. But he does have a degenerative knee problem. Michael Huff with are 1st pick sounds good.

So, he won't improve? He can't play specials?

Thats what you draft guys for in the later rounds. Development, depth and to play special teams. That will be what he is going to do on the team next year. Sheesh, should Dallas cut every young guy because he doesn't have a spot RIGHTNOW?

Riddle me this? Who is Roy's backup? Pile? Yep, I'd like to see someone developed there.

Personally, I just don't think Dallas values that position much and Zim does seem to prefer two SS types. I think the best bet would be to sign a veteran FA, so you didn't have a rookie back there. Hope from Pitt or perhaps Chavous.

I'd hate burning a first round pick on a FS. Use it on an impact position.

A FS who can cover anyone is an impact player for Dallas. An even passable NFL FS and the Cowboys were a top 2-3 defense this past season.

I understand what you meant but an improvement at a team's weakest position is "impact".

One could argue that Pettiti may have seen playing time for some other team last year. It would be hard to argue that Davis/Pile would have seen significant minutes for any other team in NFL. They were that bad.

Any word on Will Demps injury and how hes progress or what the prognosis is on hi. Hes a FS I would love to pick up, but he got badly injured late in the season and I have not heard anything about him.

If Parcells didn't think that he could play FS, then why draft him? I mean, FS was our need at that time, not a backup SS.

Best available player.... Drafting the BPA prevents us from getting a Quincy Carter in round two.:banghead:

Yeah, Beriault's knee was a re-occuring thing that the Cowboys just decided would continue to crop up until they went ahead and had the surgery... so they went ahead and did it so that he'd be ready for this year.

Can he play FS? I don't know, but he was around the ball a lot last pre-season, so maybe the guy could have a chance there. Just like Bill was moving Burnett from OLB to ILB late in the season, he might move Beriault from SS to FS next pre-season.

I'd still like to bring in a good vet FS if for no other reason than just to insure that Lynn Scott doesn't find his way back on the roster.

I'd like to see the early rounds of the draft used at impact positions... which for us is either the OL or LB...

I'm trying to figure out how so many people think that he will not make a good FS or that he can only be a back up to RW. How in heck do we know this?

I would never say what a person could or couldn't do until I see them play 1st team for at least a season.

I thought the way the defense got gashed in the run game and the lack of a consistent pass rush was worse.

The defense was gashed in the run game because Williams was often back providing help to cover for FS liabilities. A mediocre FS frees up Williams to stop the run, which frees up others to think pass rush first occasionally.

With the technology that team's pro scouting dept. have at their hands today, the smallest weak link will be exploited. When that link is as weak as FS was for Dallas this season, all the dominoes fall over.

Well, you have your opinion, I have mine. I think a serious lack of talent at the LB position in a scheme geared towards linebackers has a lot to do with it. I also think having rookie DEs in the 3-4 and a rookie LB didn't help either. Something else they might exploit with all that technology.

I don't think Williams is the sole factor in the run game. He'd help, but I think the issues above play a big part as well.

I guess this offseason will be the determining factor. I wouldn't be surprised to see a second tier vet like Hope brought in and I'd be very surprised if Dallas used a first rounder on a FS. I just don't think Dallas values the position.

I doubt they use the 1st on a FS also just because I don't see them having that much cap space tied up in the secondary.

I still think that improvement at FS would have a bigger impact than improvement at any other single position (except one, but I'll skip my usual Bledsoe diatribe for today).

The weakest link is FS. Almost anyone else is an improvement. Hope would be perfect though.

Free safety may not be an impact position but a player like Michael Huff is definitely an impact player. I know we have other needs but Huff would give us the best secondary bar none!
