It shows the Steelers are not gonna just stand pat, and settled on a failed former 1st rd pick investment. (Pickett)
They are making the moves that other non-QB teams probably should have done so.
(ala Raiders, Minnesota, Giants, Denver) ..and if Rodgers gets hurt again at age 41, .who becomes his needy backup ?
Denver has no plan and they really can’t for 2 years. That Wilson contract is going to destroy that org for the next 2 years.

Justin Fields is a Trey Lance development project, and hopeful insurance as a No.2 backup, if Russell gets hurt, and he's
a possible future replacement in case a Russell decides to call it quits in the NFL, as well as be a replacement should
Russell's game becomes so horrid in Pittsburgh, imo.

In Dak's case, a Lance is not gonna have quite a " near future, look out replacement " as Dak finished second in the entire NFL in league MVP voting, that may not mean much to disgruntled fans, but that means very much to this organization and
to Dak's peers among other NFL players and teams.

Cooper Rush makes the counter best of what physical limitations he has. He has a small arm, immobile, and little to zero escapability. But in the right scheme, he can get the ball out quickly, read progressions, and make better decision making and get into a rhythm, if he is not forced to have to handle the entire offense on his own (zero run game?)
He's a band aid until we find something better ( Lance?)

For what it is worth, . I'm all on board with keeping Rush as insurance should a Dak or Lance get hurt.
I think Russ will be a dud in Pittsburgh, playing in a tough division . The guy might be washed, but at least Pitt threw a dart.

So Denver did have a conditional 5th rounder that could have been used to get Fields ?

And Fields contract is only 1.6 million base in '2024

Or was it that HC Payton just did not think Fields was worth the late round draft pick to acquire Fields ?

And even the low tier options on the market have been taken up (Flacco, Grap)

And they can't be in a mind set to spend a No.1st rd pick on a QB ... just becuz they are flat desperate to draft a QB
just for the sake of desperately reaching for any QB.

yes, you're right - Denver does not seem to have a plan on hand.

Lets assume 2 possibilities right now if Fields went to Denver: he is good or he is bad (in this case decent can be considered good). If he is bad then you are right where you started with another top 5 all time dead money hit from Wilson (yes 2 of the top 5 all time largest single season dead money hits are the next 2 years of Wilson's contract for Denver). If he is good then you cant afford to resign because of the aforementioned dead money. The only thing Denver can do is just accept that they will be awful this year, draft a QB next year, and then the following year start to build around said QB.

yes, they will likely be awful next year, and even then they'll have to consider the " Money Ball " plan until
they break even in the black out of cap hell.

It'll be a do over with a top 5 overall pick next year. And it's never a given that they'll get that stud QB needed.
But as with any QB needy team, they have to give it a try with that rookie QB. No other choice.

The one thing he has going for him is the Steelers have a good defense. A combo of Pickett, Trubisky and Rudolph went 10-7 and that was with Trubisky going 0-3. If Pickett stayed healthy or they went with Rudolph initially once Kenny got hurt, they'd probably gone 11-6 or 12-5.

When they win it's ugly but the defense can keep them in games and often will score or set up scores for the offense. If Russ is average or above they should easily win 10+ games.

Denver was our chance to trade Trance.

Same compensation (conditions notwithstanding) as Trey Lance.

Would you rather have Fields or Lance?
And this is what is so sickening about this organization. Send a 4th for a guaranteed bust in Lance. And Steelers get a starter that's coming into his own for 6th. There is absolutely no way Shanahan gives up on Lance if he was showing any signs of developing. They never brought in Darnold to compete. His old man knows QBs too and guaranteed he discussed it with him. Cowboys now have two trash QBs in Dak and Lance. Guarantee the Steelers and Fields could punk the Cowboys.

1 of those teams was the Philadelphia Eagles I'm sure. There was rumors the Eagles would be interested as a backup to Hurts. He knew he wouldn't have a chance to start in Philadelphia, but he thinks he has a chance in Pittsburgh.

I don't see how signing Russ and Fields makes any sense. From a money perspective, sure, why not. They're both cheap. But who's going to play?

Also, I saw that other teams offered Chicago more compensation for Fields, but they let him choose his destination. It was kind of crummy how the Bears were forcing him out, so kudos to them for doing right by him.

Trance was not Shanahan's pick. John Lynch was infatuated with Trance. Luckily for us the wasted all those picks.

This is what happens when you get desperate for a QB. The Broncos thought they could strike lightning in a bottle again like they did with Peyton Manning and it blew up in their face. I commented when Wilson played his final season in Seattle that he was in decline. It was obvious! Seattle could see it which is why they traded him.

Pretty obvious their plan is to tear it down. Only option left for them.
