I follow the draft pretty closely and before last year Kai Forbath was considered a 4th round pick. Maybe higher. He was supposed to be one of the best kickers to come out in some time. Then his production dropped off last year before the draft after 3 very good years. Does anyone know why he didn't do as well last year?

Here is Scott Wright's assessment in October:

However, if there is a truly outstanding kicker prospect available teams shouldn’t be afraid to go in that direction. When it comes to the 2011 NFL Draft, there is actually a kicker who I feel might qualify as that type of special prospect and it’s UCLA’s Kai Forbath. In my opinion Forbath is the best kicker prospect to come along since Colorado’s Mason Crosby in 2007, who I had graded as a third rounder that year. Crosby inexplicably slipped to Round 6 but I feel vindicated because he turned out to be a real steal for the Green Bay Packers. Now Forbath certainly isn’t close to being on the same level as Janikowski was coming out of college but I think a team could potentially justify calling his name as early as the 3rd Round next April.

Dallas does seem intent on holding on to him, so far. But can we afford to have a kicker on the PS if we cant get a look at him by the time cuts come? Safe to say you cant make the guy your kicker without seeing him kick.

No need to PS him and lose him. Just put him on IR or PUP.

I am not totally versed on the injury rules but I believe IR loses him for the year and the PUP is the first 4 (or 6 ?) weeks. Plus when you activate him to evaluate him someone has to be released while we carry two kickers when and if we do that.

Odd he would include Mason Crosby (as an example). He hasn't exactly had a great career so far. Never has gotten over 80% and in 2009 he was 75%.

You are correct. If we IR him we lose his services for the year, but he remains under contract (so we won't lose him as a an UFA. Pup is for the 1st 6 weeks and we would at that point either have to activate him or put him on IR. The thing that sucks about that, also, is that he can't practice. I don't think there are any rules that prevent him from "rehabbing" (read practicing) or developing while on IR, so I think you could find out what you need to about the kid before next season and make a decision then about whether to retain him or go in a different direction.

Either way, at this point, I doubt the kid would contribute anything this year anyway since he's missed all of camp.

I believe when they are on PUP there is a point they are allowed to practice to prepare them to be activated if that is the decision. IR is where they can't practice, unless you are the Patriots ;).

My bad. I remember very little about the PUP rules since the last time I paid attention was when we were hoping to get one last hurrah out of Darren Woodson.

yeah the patriots is a sneaky organization. I laugh at the sneaky stuff they do and how it just gets swept under the rug like it never happened.

Hard to make the roster in street clothes.

He had some type of injury during his senior season that might have affected him, if not physically then mentally like Nick Folk.

It does seem interesting that they're holding onto him like this, even while he's injured and with a bunch of other kickers in camp.

True, he can't practice if he's on IR, but that just means he can't practice with the team, or at the team's facilities. Being a kicker, it's not like he needs reps with an offense/defense/ST's. There are private training facilities that are as big as a Home Depot. I'm thinking he could practice there on his own as much as he wanted? Right?
