Yep, he didnt start today, we were in that nickel with henry, newman reeves and hamlin at fs to start the game and stayed in it for most of the first two series.

But yep his consecutive games started, 91 straight, streak ended today. it was the longest active streak on the team.

If it was Henry, Newman, Reeves and Hamlin with the normal front seven then it is technically not a nickel package. Very interesting and I didn't notice it either, just assumed Roy was out there. What was the alignment? Did Henry and Newman play corner with Reeves and Hamlin as the "safeties" or was it Reeves and Newman at the corner?

Its a nickel package.

Newman was in the slot, henry and reeves were out wide. Hamlin was playing free safety in the middle of the field. Only one safety and 3 corners.

Trust me. He didnt start, He was hardly on the field for the first two defensive series because we were in that nickel package where hamlin plays centerfield, newman in the slot, reeves and henry out wide and we keep the extra linebacker on the field as opposed to roy.

It jumped out at me from my seat instantly. Roy was standing right next to stewart and wade on the sideline. After the first play they gave him a bunch of instructions and sent him out there, and he came back out on third down.

Yep. That's what I saw on the first play.

No way that was happening Roy is a great safety and is not bad in coverage

I been told other wise all year

I love how you've turned this into a indictment of Roy. There is only one safety on the field in that formation...should it be Roy, or the FS?

Duh.

I gotcha but technically nickel means 5 defensive backs, so it isn't "really" a nickel defense.

Very interesting stuff, I hope somebody in the Dallas media picked up on this formation and gives us some info. I wonder if we will be seeing this hybrid formation more often down the stretch, with RW being more a nickel/dime LB. I would imagine that they will use it often next week against a pass happy GB team.

I didn't get a chance to watch the whole game real close because of eating Thanksgiving dinner and such... but I only saw Roy allow 1 catch. (The Brad Smith catch late in the 4th quarter)

Looked like he did a good job covering their TE throughout the game and there were several cases where they had the TE split out wide and Roy was lined up over him. Many instances he had the TE blanketed well... hopefully that continues next week against the Packers.

They asked about it this week in Wade's press conferences. He mentioned that they've done it a few times this season and its not designed to get Roy off the field... its just a coverage formation that use that only uses 1 safety. Says they've pulled Hamlin off the field in that situation before and left Roy on.

Yeah, he looked to have a nice game today. He seems to play better out of the division, against teams with less athletic TE's. GB has a very athletic one though, he's pretty much a WR, so perhaps this hybrid defense would work well against them.

we're going to need to use the nickel/dime, whatever Wade calls the 6 DB, 1 LB package, alot next week, GB likes to use alot of 5-receiver sets

Keith Davis was unusually in good position today, it probably helps that the coaches don't put him as one of the last lines of pass defense

I think they had Roy out in a cover-2 situation. That was the play Keith Davis and the WR from the Jets got tangled up in the endzone.

That's not true. Roy was back in the game on the Jets' second play.

Roy was on the field for that play. The few times Roy is ever out of the game, we have three linemen, four true linebackers (not like Roy playing linebacker), three cornerbacks and one safety. So far, we've used it only when the opponent uses three wide receivers in running situations -- and not every time they do that. In any passing situations, we have either two or three safeties in the game, and fewer linebackers.

I was holding my breath on that one but we gotta rotate our players for the stretch, especially when we are ahead by 21+...

Do you remember where was Roy playing?

I take it Keith Davis was in because of the minor concussion that limited Watkins the first few plays?

Doesn't matter because the Roy haters never let facts get in the way of their hate.
