ANALYSIS
Strengths
First-day starter from the time he stepped foot on campus. Angular athletic build. Plays fast. Smooth hips and light feet opening from press. Plus route recognition. Anticipates and mirrors routes in space sitting in receiver's pocket along the route. Quick responder to playaction and sprints back into his responsibility. Observant from zone and off coverage. Shows recovery speed needed against long speed. Looks to do it the right way as tackler. Strikes with chest or shoulder and wraps up.

Get him now. he's got smooth hips

Wonder if the Chiefs are trying to make a move? Not only did they cut Russell but they also restructured Justin Houston's contract, creating $6MM more in cap space.

Interesting that Eagles signed former Chief Andy Murray to the practice squad.

So, if you claim him, who is the roster cut? I don't think right off the bat you can count on him to do what Wilcox or Heath do. Maybe one of the sorry LB's? One of the two FB's?
One of the FBs that they shouldn't even be able to keep active with the signing of Ryan Davis

Got to be something more to cutting him this soon. Botched medical, off the field, something. Teams are not interested in having a pick look this bad, that soon.
He struggled with the playbook. Claimed that the terminology is very similar to Notre Dame but meant different and was having a tough time adjusting. He did miss a year at Notre Dame over an academic suspension.

If we put in a claim on him, does he have to go right to the 53 or can we add him to the PS?

we claim him, he goes to 53, if he goes unclaimed he can sign on anyone's PS

edit: I'd be disappointed if we didn't put a claim in, if Tennessee, Cleveland or San Diego get him, so be it, but we need to put a claim in.

He is a SPARQs warrior and just the type of player we should gamble on since we spurn vet FAs

He costs nothing but a Smith or a do nothing LBer

Weaknesses
Can be posted up by size. Flatfooted pedal slows plant-and-close ability. Displays some balance inconsistency in change of direction. Ball skills can use work. Hyper-focuses on his man rather than finding the ball and making a play. Can speed reaction time to what quarterback's eyes are telling him. Broken fibula at the end of 2015 creates medical concern. Missed all of 2014 due to "academic dishonesty".

Draft Projection
Rounds 2 or 3

Bottom Line
Smart, experienced cornerback has strapped it on against some of the best receivers in the nation during his time with the Irish. Russell has the athleticism and cover talent to play press coverage and make a living there, but he may never produce as many pass breakups or interceptions as a team would like. Played outside and from the slot and offers that versatility to an NFL team as a future starter or third corner.
Thank you!

I read some further chatter that the Chiefs weren't happy with how he was struggling to pick up their coverages. So who really knows what the deal is. I'd still take a flier on him, especially if the Cowboys had him 78th on their board. That's a high to mid-third round player there.

Scandrick has a sore hamstring too.

LOL. I am so glad we are putting that 4th claim position to good use.
