RVING, Texas -- The backup quarterback position was a major offseason question mark before OTAs, but if the Cowboys were trying to acquire another quarterback, Kellen Moore says he wasn’t paying too much attention.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett announced on the first day of OTAs that Moore deserves the opportunity to win the backup job behind Tony Romo. Moore is now going through his first full offseason program after being picked up by the team in September 2015.

“Doing the offseason program is huge after not being able to do it last year and I’m not having to play catch up,” Moore said. “Learning new things is one thing but actually having the practice and executing is huge. I feel a ton more confident.”

Confidence is definitely important for a quarterback, but Moore also has a definite advantage over Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers playing in Scott Linehan’s offense. Linehan was Moore’s coach during their time together with the Detroit Lions, and he’s been his advocate since the Cowboys acquired him.

I still have hope for Moore. It's true his plays will be limited because of limited skills but what
he can execute I think he'll serve the Cowboys well. Of course, I thought JJ Wilcox would be a
good Safety!

I have always been all in with this guy as the primary backup. His biggest asset is his intelligence. I did not know that he was not here during training camp.He will be a valuable back up through out his career here and anywhere else if he leaves here.

If he played his natural safety spot. ....ss....instead of out of position he would do better

I don't know. He's not a particularly good box safety either.

Seeing as Church handled most of the SS duties guess so. The times I seen him play there he was much better then at FS.

Personally I think we need a SS to pair with Jones and keep Church and/or Wilcox as depth. I got down on Church this season more then Wilcox. He missed a ton of tackles and played poorly, much more so then Wilcox

I think safety has been the worst position on the team over the past 15 years or so. When the defense has had success, it's usually been in spite of their safety play rather than because of.

I'm just looking forward to having a legitimate center fielder in Byron Jones. I'm tired of the secondary being slow and chronically out of position.

I agree. I think Jones will be really good at FS. Maybe improved front 7 play and Scandrick returning maybe the secondary can do decent. Next draft go after a SS and fix that position for the next 8-10 years

I like Moore, I always have. I had the opportunity, living where I do, to watch him a lot in College. I like him and I do believe he should get every opportunity to win the job but, it should be a job that is won in competition against another experience NFL QB. If you think about it in terms of team, what good does it do for us if Moore wins the job competing against other QBs who have never started or played any significant minutes in the NFL? All that will prove is that he is the best of that lot but that lot is not what will be needed if we are forced to play the backup. Thats the kind of mistake this team has made in the past and I hope it's not one that we will make again this year.

The post Romo years just flashed before my eyes.

I'm with you, but have faith that they will then draft a QB. I would love a young good QB high in the draft while Romo is still on the staff. Perhaps Dak will be him, but you never know.

I have no hope. He's a literal mouth-breather.

I like Moore. He's like Tony Romo without all that natural ability. That's not a bad guy to have backing Tony up, necessarily. If he ever gets the snaps to develop a feel for the NFL level, he could be a long-time backup QB in this league, I think.

The problems I have with him is that we have to give him reps. If we'd given them during last year's wasted season, we'd have the answer as to whether or not Moore can be a legitimate backup in this league. As it is, we haven't seen enough to know. And those reps could have come at the expense of Matt Cassel, who proved as early as the Giants game that he was not going to get it done as far as I'm concerned. We wasted a chance to develop Moore, and then because we didn't have enough data, we didn't seriously try to upgrade his position in the offseason. It's a half-measure both ways.

I do agree with that. After it was proven we couldn't win with anyone else we should have put Moore in. The problem was even with our record, we were still in the division race. I think that's why they didn't make the switch.
