To the idea of "great fit," I propose that we have to get it that when the OC isn't the play caller, the OC label is mostly a misnomer.

The offense will be Schotty's offense, no different than the fact that the offense was always McCarthy's the last two years... not Schotty's.

Schotty was a glorified assistant... a right-hand man to the god of the offense... the guy who helps the HC implement what he wants and is otherwise just there to do all the things that the HC can more efficiently hand off to him.

So... "fit"... is exclusively a matter of what Schotty considers to be a fit. Schotty's going to rely on this person to be an extension of himself. That's as much if not more about soft skills--capacity to take instruction and to implement instruction--as it is about football smarts.

And this is why I'm captivated by how this plays out because it appears so far anyways that Schotty's genuinely considering someone he hardly knows, if at all. (McCarthy and Schotty knew each other ahead of that OC hire, obviously, because of McCarthy's connection to his dad.)

How do you know?

No, really. This "young smart vision fresh ideas" thing is such a sweet rainbows and unicorns perception, but the reality is, there's not a lot of new to be found in a game that has been around for a hundred years. Nearly everything we see on a given Sunday has been tried before. That's just objective fact.

And the reality is the game still comes down to execution and talent. Always will.

I want qualified, proven people in the war room with me if I can afford it. And I can afford it. Leave the proving grounds to the franchises where there are no lofty expectations year-in-year-out like Carolina or Jacksonville.

I literally despise people like this, whose only best way of responding is with "Oh, you think you're so smart." If you can't reply with something relevant/thoughtful/intelligent/compelling, then what even is the purpose of calling attention to that fact?

Huge Miami Hurricane fan here but trust me.......Ken Dorsey is an awful OC. Word is people from the Bills tried to warn the Browns how bad he was but they didn't listen.

I haven’t followed UM much lately, but when I lived down there from 99-03 most of my pals were alum, so I saw almost all of Dorsey’s games there.

He was the ultimate bus driver. I wonder if that affects the way he calls plays. Maybe he is a little too conservative. I wouldn’t really know. I did know the lovely woman he eventually married though.

How many great coaches were fired two seasons in a row as an OC and then got a job as an OC the very next season?
He was fired from the Bills and the Offense took off. He then took an average Browns Offense and helped make them into one of the worst in the league.

Now apart from the stats we've seen going around on Twitter and Reddit about Dorsey's offense:

• 1 in success rate (48%)​

• 2 in third down conversion rate (49%)​

• 3 in early down success rate (47%)​

• 3 in EPA/play (+0.09)​

• 4 in rate of downs converted into a new first down (77%)​

• 4 in points/minute of possession (0.85)​

I wanted to dive into some of the other complaints about Dorsey's offense.

• The Offense was Boom or Bust meaning they passed deep a ton and Allen was carrying the team
• The Offense couldn't sustain drives
• The Offense couldn't score points
• The Offense didn't run the ball enough nor did it have enough success running the ball

Some of those are so specific I'm not sure how meaningful they are, especially when they leave out the important, simple metrics (ppg, etc ). It sounds a little like the list of obscure stats the Dakazoids will pull out to prop up Dak.

I'm no Dorsey fan, and have worn a rut in my head scratching why he even got in the mix... but that said... that Browns team was a disaster for half the season because of Deshaun Watson, no question about that.

“We don’t want Dak to run” came out of Jerry mouth a few days before he went down for the year.

They think he is Dan Marino. Call me negative all you want, but my attitude has zero to do with it. This is going to be a rough few years folks.

Goff is even less mobile than dak, but look at the tools and fireworks he had to work with per personnel and coach scheme....
