Ken Hamlin vs. Deon Grant

Deon Grant was my highest rated FS in free agency, so I'm doing a little comparitive analysis between him and our newest FS, yes, I think Hamlin signs w/ us, and here's what we have

Hamlin, 16 games:

tackles: 96
pass-breakups: 8
INTs: 3
sacks: 2

Deon Grant, 16 games:

tackles: 60
pass-breakups: 5
INTs: 2

even though I liked Deon better than Hamlin, there's not much drop-off between the 2's play in coverage, while Hamlin makes more plays all-around, and the great thing is Hamlin is 3 years younger

The only people that think Grant is better are the Seattle fans and that was only after they realized that Hamlin wasnt coming back.

The Jags corners and front 7 were a ton better than Seattles last year and Seattles corners were decimated by injury. Yet despite this Hamlin STILL performed at a higher level.

im really not so sure about that myself. i havent seen them both extensively but i do know for a fact that Hamlin had to make up for his corners on those deep routes a lot more than Grant did. The Jags passrush was also much better.

Grant is a good athlete and covers a lot of space, but he has hands of stone. Ask any Jags fan ... he probably dropped 7 easy interceptions last year

I wish our safeties dropped 7 INTs, rather than give up 7 TDs :laugh2:

Deon Grant is a better leader and smarter player. He's a natural free safety with a nose for the ball....

What I don't understand is how Hamlin makes up so much ground in coverage. He ran a 4.6 at the combine and yet he doesn't seem to be caught out of position as much as other higher rated safeties. He is actually a pretty good cover and run support safety. Not much weakness to his overall game.

For the same reason Zach Thomas is a better LB than Boss Bailey. I'll take a 4.6 guy who has instincts and can see plays developing quickly over a 4.4 guy with no natural feel for the game who's slow to react.

I would much rather have Hamlin than Grant. Hamlin is younger and much more talented. He's just a better overall athlete.

He actually ran a 4.55 at the combine (2003 Kiper Report) Here is a little excerpt:

Hamlin runs a consistent 4.55, which is a pretty good mark for a safety, factor in his 33"vj as well as his strength, and he has excellent overall physical ability. He's not a ferocious hitter, but you could still make the argument that he's a fairly complete player--a reliable tackler and he holds up well in coverage for a big guy. Defensive coordinators are always on the lookout for safeties who can hold their own in coverage, and Hamlin fits that bill.

*If he can stay focused on the job at hand--when you combine his workout numbers with his all-over-the-field production during his three seasons--Hamlin can become a very good player in the NFL.

*Combine Note--Ran a 4.55, did 16 reps, and had a 33" vj.

wow i really find that surprising. i went over to the seahawks forum and that was what they were saying. well up until they signed grant and russell at which they turned on hamlin that is but i digress.

i could go into the whole sacks are not indicative of a pass rush argument but that would make me a hypocrite so i wont do that but that really suprises me. thats what i get for trust ing seattle fans

Hey when you actually prove me wrong then youll have something to crow about. the fact that you feel good when someone proves me wrong shows that perhaps you might need to come up with some new motivation in life. just sayin.
